Mr. Kottwitz was born Oct. 2, 1920, to Walter H.J. and Merle G. (Henry) Kottwitz on a farm southwest of Blue Hill. The family later moved to the family farm northeast of Blue Hill. He attended a rural school near his home through third grade and then transferred to Trinity Lutheran School in Blue Hill. He graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1938. He attended business college in Hastings for two years and was employed by the Civil Service Commission at the Adjutant General's office in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 in Morocco, Tunisia, Corsica and Italy. On March 7, 1946, he married Harriette E. Bentz at her home with the Rev. Walter Meyer officiating. He worked at Bentz Implement Co. until the fall of 1960. He graduated from Hastings College with a bachelor's degree in 1963 and became the first math and physical science teacher in the new Blue Hill High School building. He continued his education through science institutes and workshops and after four summers in Troy, N.Y., he received his master's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1972. He continued to teach until retirement in 1983. His wife died Jan. 27, 1994. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and A.L. Shirley Post No. 176, both in Blue Hill. Survivors are one daughter, Edith Tinkham of Sargent; one son, Randal of Merrimack, N.H.; one brother, Burnell of Blue Hill; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
