She was a Blue Hill native, the daughter of H.H. and Edith Bentz, long-time Blue Hill business people. She was the beloved wife of Cecil (married March 7, 1948), and the loving mother of Edith Tinkham of Sargant, Nebraska and Randal Kottwitz of Merrimack, New Hampshire. Two brothers, N. Harold and T. Read More	Harriette Kottwitz Harriette (Bentz) Kottwitz, died suddenly at her home in Blue Hill, on January 27, 1994. She was a Blue Hill native, the daughter of H.H. and Edith Bentz, long-time Blue Hill business people. She was the beloved wife of Cecil (married March 7, 1948), and the loving mother of Edith Tinkham of Sargant, Nebraska and Randal Kottwitz of Merrimack, New Hampshire. Two brothers, N. Harold and T. Woodson Bentz also survive, as do three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services were held on January 31, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill, where Mrs. Kottwitz was a member. The Rev. Robert Seible officiated and Alvin Willems was organist. The congregation sang favorite hymns. Dennis Kottwitz, Eugene Kottwitz, Kevin Willems, Phil Bentz, Steve Birchall, and Bill Pearson were casketbearers and interment was at the Blue Hill Cemetery. Harriette lived her life with energy and enthusiasm. She never stopped learning and growing, and took great joy in sharing her knowledge with others. She began her teaching career at Grandview School, District #45, east of Blue Hill, immediately after graduating from Blue Hill High School in 1938. She later attended the University of Nebraska and earned her BA from Hastings College in 1956. She taught Home Economics, English and Art at Blue Hill High School until her retirement in 1983. She served as a 4-H Club leader for 15 years, and was a long-time member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the professional association of women in teaching. An avid gardener all her life, she and Cecil owned Kottwitz Floral for two years until they sold it to continue work on their college degrees. She loved working in her garden, which contains an eclectic collection of unusual species. Throughout her life, Harriette enjoyed traveling to museums to learn more about art and history, and had just spent the Sunday before her death exploring a museum. One of her greatest joys was her collection of antique dolls, and she had recently finished restoring the original clothing on a rare Juneau. Harriette was active in community affairs and served as an officer in numerous organizations in the area. A long-time supporter of the arts, she and Cecil worked on behalf of the Hastings Community Concert Association and the Hastings Community Theatre for many years. Because of her thirst for knowledge and her devotion to teaching others, the family request that memorial donations be made to the new IMAX Theater at the Hastings Museum, in her name. Harriette led the family on many trips to explore the country and its culture. During the summers while Cecil worked on his Master of Natural Sciences degree at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, they took advantage of the opportunity to attend concerts, ballet and theatrical performances, visited museums, historical sites, and natural wonders. While visiting their son, Randal, in New Hampshire, they enjoyed the wealth of cultural opportunities in New England, including the Boston Symphony, museums, theatre, and of course, doll auctions. In all, they explored 40 of the 50 states, and traveled throughout Europe in 1982.
