Description	:	Cecil Joseph Child, son of Theron Floyd and Alice Emily McClain Child, was born at Tabor, Iowa, April 25, 1913 and passed away January 23, 1987 at the Nursing Center of Sunset Home in Concordia at the age of 73 years. Cecil's parents were pastors in the Kansas District of the Wesleyan Church for many years. Read More	Cecil Joseph Child, son of Theron Floyd and Alice Emily McClain Child, was born at Tabor, Iowa, April 25, 1913 and passed away January 23, 1987 at the Nursing Center of Sunset Home in Concordia at the age of 73 years. Cecil's parents were pastors in the Kansas District of the Wesleyan Church for many years. This meant that Cecil grew up in a parsonage home and necessarily moved a number of times in his childhood and youth. Cecil took his High School work at Miltonvale, Wesleyan College. Following his graduation from Miltonvale he was united in marriage to Della Ford at Council Grove, Kansas, Nov. 5, 1932. To this union four children were born: Theron, David, Gene and Paul. Theron passed away as a small child. Cecil taught rural schools for ten years in Cloud County. In 1940 he left the teaching profession and moved with his family to Salina, Kansas where he was employed in the State Grain Inspection Department. Following that he joined the Postal Department in Concordia in July of 1945 where he spent approximately twenty eight years carrying mail of the various routes in the city of Concordia. He retired in 1972 because of failing health. During the last three years he was cared for in the Sunset Nursing Center and by his wife who went almost every day to take care of his needs. Cecil was a family man who enjoyed his wife and children and his grandchildren as well. During the last few years of his life his spiritual life was most consistent. He was a member of the Concordia Wesleyan Church. Cecil was a kind man but not a man of many words. However when Cecil spoke he always had something important to say. He shall be greatly missed by his wife and children and other members of the family and his friends. His parents and one son, Theron Delton Child preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Della of the home, three sons David Gail Child and wife Mary Ann of Brunswick, Maine; Vaden Gene Child and wife Arlone of Golden, Colo. and Paul Norman of Vicenza, Italy. One brother Paul William Child of Mesa, Ariz. and one sister Amma Margaret Lachenmaier of Peabody. Kansas. Eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren beside many other relatives and friends. Cecil will be great missed by all of those who knew him and loved him. PORTRAIT OF A COMMON MAN Second Edition Cecil Joseph Child born April 25, 1913 in Tabor, Iowa. He was the third child of Alice McClain Child and the Reverend Theron Floyd Child who wrote an autobiography "Portrait of a Common Man", in 1949. As a son of a county minister the constant moving and relocating seemed to carry over throughout his life. For example, he never wanted to travel the same road twice unless he had to. Do you realize that there are more than 50 ways to go from Concordia to Peabody, a town near Newton, where Cecil's sister has lived for over 40 years. Also, during the 54 years of marriage, he and Della lived in over 50 different places. Just in Concordia alone they lived in over 15 houses. Since no house is perfect, this son of a common man became a jack of all trades, as he proceeded to remodel most of them. Professionally Cecil was a farmer, teacher, grain inspector, and mail carrier. Avocationally he became a gardener, an inveterate reader, and storehouse of knowledge. He was a lover of music---he often would travel quite a distance to see and hear "The Blackwood Brothers Barbershop Quartet." By himself he also learned to play the harmonica which introduces an interesting story: One of the dangers inherent in being a mail carrier is the possibility of bein attacked and bitten by a dog. Cecil of Course, experienced such times but surprisingly there was also the time that he as adopted by a dog. "Blackie" would wait for Cecil each day and follow him as he made his rounds. Eventually, Cecil got in the habit of letting Blackie join the family at lunch. Quite often after eating, Cecil would get out his harmonica to play. As he played Blackie would begin to how, his way of singing along. This duet got to be a very common and amusing occurrence. It also illustrates that Cecil did not believe that life has to be all work and no play. In fact, leisure time, whether on a daily basis or vacation time was very important to him. On a daily basis the evenings were a time t o either read or list en to the radio, but in doing so it was a time of sharing with others, a time for the family to be together. His concept of a vacation was to see as much of the United States as possible. When his children began to expand the concept to overseas he wanted to know "Why go to Europe when you haven't seen all of the United Stat es?" This didn't mean that the boys couldn't go; rather it was more an expression of Cecil's sense of humor. His wit escaped the notice of many people unless they caught the low chuckle that might escape his lips or saw the gleam in his eye. Generally speaking Cecil was more comfortable being an observer rather than an actor. He was quiet and reserved but would quite often surprise people with his knowledge, memory, and insight. Understatement was the name of the game; very little if anything was perfect; just about everything was described by "It's not bad." He was a dreamer but a realist. He was all that loved ones might desire. January 23, 1987------ The 2nd Edition of a "Portrait of A Common Man" is now complete. Please join us in acknowledging what Cecil may have said at least to himself, "There is nothing wrong with being the son of a common man!"
