Description	:	Charlie was born in Germany to mother Jacobine and father Emil Holder. His mother listed Frankfurt as their home in Germany on their passenger record at Ellis Island. Mother and 10 month old son immigrated on the S.S. Lahn steerage class from Bremen arriving 3/8/89 (National Archives ) or 1/1/89 (Ellis Island). Charles immigrated as Karl Holder later anglicized to Charles. Ellis Island passenger ID 9012186583770. His father had immigrated the prior year per census records. In 1900 the family lived in Galloway New Jersey on a farm outside of Atlantic City. Per Charlie the family was desperately poor. Charlie always said that he was forced to work as an indentured servant to a farmer in Pennsylvania around the age of 13 until he escaped at 16 which would have been 1904. Sometime between 1900 and 1905 Jacobine (Jakobine or Katherine Wilhelm) and Emil moved to Philadelphia and were divorced. This is corroborated by Charlie's siblings living with a divorced Katherine Wilhelm (Jacobine's maiden name) in New Jersey in 1905 without Charlie in the household. In 1910 Emil was living in a boarding house without the family. Louise’s wedding record in 1915 states her mother’s new name as Catherine Williams of Philadelphia while Emil Holder is listed as her father. After escaping servitude Charlie made his way to Cincinnati where he met his first wife Nettie Kottmyer at a rooming house operated by Nettie’s mother in Sayler Park, Ohio west of downtown. (Various English spellings used including Kottmeyer, and Kottmeir). After moving to Ohio, Charlie often cited his birthplace as Pennsylvania despite not moving there until he was at least 12. His first marriage bore two children, Robert and Mary Louise but ended in divorce. Charlie was a lifetime member of Cincinnati Ironworkers Union Local 44 and worked on all the major Cincinnati bridges and building projects from about 1910 through 1965. His favorite job was “throwing rivets” which involved heating rivets to red hot temperatures at high elevation. It was dangerous and therefore paid well. Charles second marriage to Sadie bore one child, Charles A. At that time, Charlie lived in Anderson Township. Charlie Sr. was incredibly frugal. He worked a paying job as a janitor at a local retailer called Twin Fair and farmed a very large home garden well into his mid 80’s. While he always was a saver and had sufficient resources, he lived so austerely that his coworkers took collections for him at holidays thinking him destitute. Charlie always had a charming personality, liked to joke and never lost his east coast inflection on certain words including his own first name that lacked an “r” in his annunciation of it.
