Swanstrom, coroner's jury in an inquest holden over the bodies of C.A. Guild and Clarence Guild in Yell township, Webster county, Iowa, there lying this 28th day of June, 1901 before D.T. Youker, acting coroner, doon oath return that this is our verdict, that said deceased, C.A. Guild and Clarence Guild, came to their death by wounds inflicted by a shot gun in the hands of Oliver Bricker, in testimony whereof we have set our hands, June 28, 1901. W.F. HOHN B.J. PRICE C.J. One of the most horrible tragedies ever enacted in this part of the state occurred Friday afternoon between 1 and 2 o'clock in Yell township, Webster county, about five and a half miles northwest of Stratford, and as a result of it, two men, C.A. Guild and son, Clarence, 19 years old, now lie cold in death, while Ol Bricker has three wounds. It was the end of a feud of about two years duration, but the direct cause of this last fatal quarrel was that the night before the fence around Guild's 40-acre field had been cut down and the cattle let out and he blamed the Bricker's for doing the deed. The result was a quarrel in the forenoon of Friday and then followed by the fatal shooting in the afternoon. Last fall Guild was shot at from ambush and Bricker was arrested as being the one who did this shooting, but the grand jury failed to bring in an indictment. At about this same time a 5-foot mesh fence around a 40-acre field belonging to Guild was cut to pieces and he again suspected Bricker's as the guilty parties. Below are the testimonies of Ollie Bricker and Charley Guild, Jr., as they told it to a Courier reporter, when interviewed: OL BRICKER'S STORY. "It occurred between 1 and 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. I was out looking for Fred Lynde, when I met C.A. Guild and his 19-year old son, Clarence. Guild said 'you're the man I'm looking for,' and pulling a revolver, shot at me and missed, shot a second time and hit me in the lip and then shot again, striking me in the right forearm. Then I knocked the revolver from his hand and he told Clarence to pick it up and shoot me. Clarence got the revolver and just as I was going through the fence he shot me a glancing shot over the right eye. After Clarence started to shoot I told my brother, George, to get the shot gun and he got it, gave it to me, and I shot Clarence first, killing him instantly and then shot Guild, killing him on the spot. Then we left them lying in the road and went to Stratford." CHARLEY GUILD'S, JR. STORY. "My father, C.A Guild, brother Clarence, and myself went out to find some cattle. When we had gone but a short distance, father told me to go back and plow corn and I started back. I was about 100 yards away when they met Ol Bricker at the corner of the roads and hearing sounds of shooting turned just in time to see Ol. Bricker running toward my father with a revolver in his hands shooting at father. He shot twice. At about the same time George Bricker ran across an open space with a shot gun in position at his shoulder and when but a little distance from father and Clarence, fired at Clarence first, who dropped dead in the road, and then shot father, who also fell, dead." C.A. Guild was shot in the breast killing him instantly. Clarence shot in the left side, just under and in front of the arm-pit in the upper part of the chest, ranging downward, covering a surface about six by eight inches. Bricker used a double-barreled 12-gauge shot gun and No. 6 shot. Guild used a 38 caliber revolver and four chambers were empty when revolver was found. Coroner Youker of Fort Dodge impaneled a jury, who came to the decision that C.A. and Clarence Guild came to their death by wounds from a shot gun in the hands of Bricker. Ol. and George Bricker are in jail at Rockwell City. Mrs. Guild went to where her husband an son lay, and taking off her apron, reverently wrapped it around her dead husband's head, then returned to her home where she suffered a severe shock. The funeral of both men was held Sunday in a grove at the Guild home, Rev. S.S. Eslick preached the sermon. Fully 200 teams were there and a conservative estimate is that between seven and eight hundred persons attended. The bodies were laid side by side in the Oakwood cemetery. The pall bearers for Mr. Guild were: A.J. Richardson, F.D. Richey, Alvin Fuller, F. Sterlingham of Webster City, C.D. Waterbury of Dayton and Albert Bell; for Clarence Guild: John and Earl Richardson, Roy Richey, Charley and Dan Rentschelar, and Doran McGuire.
