Description	:	Charles A. DePauw, 88, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at the Mayflower Health Care Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Madison Church of Christ near Brooklyn with Pastor Dennis Smith and Pastor John Epperson officiating. Organist will be Jan Read and trumpeter will be Kayla Postels. Casket Bearers will be his grandchildren. Interment will be at the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on Wednesday, and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A memorial fund in his name will be established. Charles was born on Feb. 17, 1923, in Hartwick, to Edmond and Blanche Hendricks DePauw. He attended country school and graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1940. On July 10, 1945, he was united in marriage to Erma Ruth Smith at her parent's home near Brooklyn. The couple farmed north of Malcom and in the Brooklyn area for 39 years, winning several conservations awards. During that time, he served as a director for the Brooklyn Co-op Creamery and the Malcom Farmer's Elevator. Charles was a member of the Madison Church of Christ serving as a trustee, deacon and elder. After the family moved to Grinnell in 1986, he became a member of the Grinnell Christian Church. While living in Grinnell, he was employed by Lang Brothers Equipment and Southard Implement. He enjoyed woodworking, farming and activities with his family. Survivors include his wife, Erma DePauw of Grinnell; his children, Janet (Chuck) Gorsch of West Burlington, James (Brenda) DePauw of St. Charles, John (Carol) DePauw of Council Bluffs, Joel (Rosanne) DePauw of Collinsville, Okla., and Julie (Joe) Kriegel of Brooklyn; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond (Mary) DePauw of Brooklyn, and Wallace DePauw of Marion; one sister, Donna Henning, of Hartwick; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn DePauw, of Galena, Kan.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Lucie DePauw; and one brother, Marvin DePauw.
