Raymond Frederick DePauw was born April 22, 1927 in rural Poweshiek County, the son of Edmond and Blanche Hendricks DePauw. He attended the Poweshiek County rural schools and graduated from Brooklyn High School with the Class of 1945. He served in the U.S. Army. Raymond married Norma Roth on February 14, 1950 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. To this union four children were born, Mike, Devran, Kathy and Bethany. Norma passed away on March 3, 1989. Raymond and Mary Coleman Cline were married on December 1, 1990 in Iowa City. In his early years, Raymond worked at the Phillips 66 station, and with the Poweshiek County Road Department, retiring as a foreman in 1989. During this time Raymond ran his own company, DePauw Construction, designing and building ponds and terraces for several years. He was a member of Brooklyn American Legion Post 294, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, was on the board of Calvary Cemetery, and was a weather spotter for KCRG. In his free time, Raymond enjoyed woodworking and having coffee with his many friends. He was very proud of his Belgium heritage. Raymond is survived by his wife Mary; a son, Mike (Pauline) of Malcom, a daughter Kathy Gilliland of Cedar Rapids, three grandchildren, Joshua (Migdalia) Gilliland of Hiawatha, Mariah Gilliland of Cedar Rapids, and Laura (Josh) Nelson of Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Samuel and Santiago Gilliland, and Andrea, Freddie, and Nichole Nelson; a brother Wally DePauw of Marion; a sister Donna Henning of Hartwick; and a sister-in-law Erma DePauw of Grinnell. Also surviving are step-children, Mary Jo (John) Upah of Brooklyn, Daniel (Barb) Cline of Colorado, Donald (Sharon) Cline of Texas, Virginia (Wayne) Arens of Brooklyn, Beth (Russ) VanRenterghem of Oskaloosa, and Ken (Jennifer) Cline of Brooklyn; along with numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Norma, two daughters, Devran DePauw, and Bethany Hamilton, and two brothers, Chuck and Marvin. Source: Kloster Funeral Home
