Charles Alhanein Houtzer, a third generation American of German and English descent, was born in Lima, married 12-08-1896, Lima to Anna Elizabeth "Lizzie" HARTMAN, dau. of Johnathan and Martha KNOWLES of PA whose families fought in the Am. Rev. War. and had 2 children, Herbert and Mary who both lived only to early 60's, ironically both alone with no one to go for help- Herbert of a stroke when inside a locked railroad package car and Mary a heart attack at home alone. Their early marriage they lived with Cornelius Rousch family home I believe are Houtzer cousin. They moved several times around Lima until new homes were being built on farmland in S.E. Lima on Pine st and Kibby St. Charles built a house at 544 S. Pine in Lima about 1897 (his wife or children live here 65 years), next door to his brother, Franklin at 542. Charles died young, age 32, in a sawmill accident leaving a widow with 2 preschoolers; his widow never remarried. In 1900 census, Charles parents, Robert/Addie, are living with his family in Lima and his occupation is listed as a handle sawyer, at the O.B. Selfridge handle factory 3 blocks from their home at Central Ave / Kibby St. (appears to still be a business there). Within blocks of Charles is also Aunt, Viola (Charles) SMITH and Lizzie's parents and 2 unmarried siblings on Kibby St. Chas. died in 1904 in an freak work accident when he was hit by a piece of timber kicked back toward him by the saw when it hit a knot in the board; hitting him in the heart, breaking 3 ribs; causing his death instantly (defibrillation); wonderful glowing obituary about his strong Christian character in Lima News, his name was carved on Olivet Presbyterian church stained glass window where Lizzie attended until her death. His mother died from cancer the next month and widower father, Robert, lived 15 more years next door with Franklin, Lizzie's father dying the same year. "Lizzie" never remarried and lived the longest of her 2 siblings, worked cleaning the church then in the hospital kitchens for 35 years and lived in S. Pine home until 1930. At times children, Herbert or Mary, and their families live with her. Her never-married brother, Johnathan, died 1927 leaving his house to their never-married sister, Mary, who died in 1930, Lizzie inherited that house at 778 Oak St., near the hospital across town so she allows twice-divorced then widowed daughter, with 3 young children, inherit and live in the Pine St house until her Lizzie died in 1955, Mary moved to Oak st and Lizzie's widowed granddau. with 6 children, Mary Louise Michael-Holliday, lived in the house her ggrand-father built. Lizzie took a cab to work each day up in her later years. One day she didn't come out to her cab, so the cabbie went to her door. She had fallen and broken her hip. She was taken to Castle Convelescent Home in Van Wert, dying 6 weeks later. The Oak St. house left to son, Herbert, who lived in Chicago, IL and it was sold in the 1970's, being a rental for him then his ex-wife, Cretora. Supposedly, Chas name is etched in one of the stained glass window here. son, Herbert A. Houtzer married Cretora HALL and moved to Chicago, IL about 1924 (3 children) he divorced her then married divorcee, Jessie Powell (no children). daughter, Mary married (1)Wm R. Wooley, (1 dau), div., (2) John R. Garrett, 1 son, 1 dau., div., both men died young. The 3 stayed living in Lima all their lives. The Times Democrat, June 27, 1904, pg 5: Accident Occurs at the Handle FActory, Charles Houtzer truck by a flying timber: Heavy piece returned from an eight-inch saw, hit him over the heart, causing death instantly. Charles A. Houtzer, a valued and well-known employee at the handle factory, at Central Ave / Kibby St, was accidentally killed instantly about 3:20 o'clock this afternoon, by being hit by a piece of timber which he had just been handling on one of the saw carriages. He had ripped in two an eight-inch handle bold when one of the pieces was caught by the saw and hurled against him, end-wise, striking him over the heart and fracturing three of his ribs. Dr's Rudy and Buchanan were summoned and did all that was possible for the injured man but without avail and he expired in about fifteen minutes after the injury. The deceased was about 31 years of age and is survived by a wife and two children residing on south Pine St. lima-times-democrat-Jun-28-1904-p-3: A tribute listed he started work 1892 for the O.B. Selfridge Woods Co. (maker of the "D" shovel handle) where he was a valued employee, a foreman, and active in his church which is listed as Presbyterian Church on main street.
