Description	:	Charles Alvin (Buddy) Smals, 81, of Buena Vista, Va., went to be with his Lord on Friday, January 30, 2015, at his home. Mr. Smals was born on February 15, 1933, in Grottos, and was the son of the late George Russel Smals and Ruby Lynn Smals. He was a member of the First Brethren Church, where he held the positions of youth leader, Sunday school teacher, deacon, moderator and music director. Read More	Charles Alvin (Buddy) Smals, 81, of Buena Vista, Va., went to be with his Lord on Friday, January 30, 2015, at his home. Mr. Smals was born on February 15, 1933, in Grottos, and was the son of the late George Russel Smals and Ruby Lynn Smals. He was a member of the First Brethren Church, where he held the positions of youth leader, Sunday school teacher, deacon, moderator and music director. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Smals retired from Burlington Industries. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Surface Smals; a brother, William Smals; a stepdaughter, Martha K. Duff; a stepgrandson, Matthew Keyes; two half sisters, Dorothy Cravella and Gene Lawhorn. Mr. Smals is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda Keyes Smals; three children, Ronald Alvin Smals and wife, Susan, Kathy Smals Adcock and husband, Willie, Donna Smals Cole and husband, Danny; four stepchildren, Betty K. Trainer and husband, Marshall, Larry Keyes and wife, Cindy, Barbara Keyes, Billy Keyes and wife, Pam; one brother, James R. Smals; one grandson, Brandon and wife, Britni; one great-granddaughter, Natalie; eight stepgrandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; a stepson-in-law, Wayne Duff; and many other family and friends. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2015, at the First Brethren Church with the Rev. Mike Hamilton, the Rev. W. David Bain, and the Rev. W.A. Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and anytime at the Smals residence. Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Buena Vista, Va.
