Read More	Charles Bernard Anderton, Jr. -- born May 2, 1911 in Ware Neck, but spent his teen years in Bohannon. But he broke his glasses this afternoon at school and he was sad about that as his glasses will have to be sent away and fixed and he can't see to study without them. He helps me to feed every night and morning." In 1935, Bernard married Frances Debnam White, born June 16, 1909, and the daughter of Onia Absalom White and Mary Sharp Foster. They raised their family in the house between Bohannon and Mobjack that Frances's father built about 1897. In that same year of his marriage, Bernard took advantage of an opportunity to become a local hero. One evening in September, he was driving up and down the road and happened to be the first one to Hicks Wharf after a passenger and freight boat, the "Munnatawket" had caught fire. He and three other young men "ignoring the risk to themselves, cast off lines from the crippled vessel and saved thereby valuable property. No land-based property was destroyed in the explosions which ensued; however, the fire ended the commercial steamer runs on East River and the Mobjack Bay area, as steamboat service was already suffering from ‘modern, improved transportation methods'." Bernard was an automobile salesman from 1931 until 1984 and was the sales manager at Twigg Motor Company (Chevrolet) in Mathews for many years. In 1959 he started his own insurance business which he sold in 1980. Frances was the postmistress at Bohannon Post Office for 49 years and three months. When she retired on February 29, 1980, their son, Ralph, took her place. Over the years, Bernard and Frances attended Grace Providence United Methodist Church at Mobjack. Bernard was a member of several fraternal orders, including the Odd Fellows and Shriners, and he loved piano music. In later years, he asked me to play "The Robin's Return" when I visited him. Bernard had a stroke in 1977; this being complicated by diabetes which eventually necessitated the amputation of one of his legs in December 1988. He never recovered from the surgery and died on January 5, 1989. He is buried in Providence Cemetery. Frances, much loved by her children, passed away in 1998. ANDERTON MATHEWS - Charles Bernard Anderton Jr., 77, of Bohannon, died Thursday, Jan.5, in Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News. He was an automobile salesman from 1931-88 and for many years was sales manager for the former Twigg Motor Co. in Mathews. He was also an independent insurance agent from 1959-80. He was a member of Grace-Providence United Methodist Church, Mobjack, past master of Oriental Lodge No. 20, AF&AM, Mathews, past president of the Tidewater Shrine Club and a member of Urbanna Royal Arch Chapter 59, Richmond Commandery No. 2, Khedive Shrine Temple, Norfolk, and Mobjack Lodge 73, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Survivors include his wife, Frances D. Anderton; a daughter, Mary Joan Hurst of Hampton; a son, Charles R. Anderton of Bohannon; three sisters, Virginia A. Bassett and Lillian M. Anderton, both of Mathews, and Louise S. Bailey of Baltimore; a brother, J. Linwood Anderton of Mathews; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, by the Rev. Wade Sisk. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery, Miles. A Masonic service will be held at 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Grace-Providence United Methodist Church, in care of Dunbar Lawson, Cardinal 23025.
