Description	:	Charles Bernard Anderton was born in Ware Neck, Gloucester County, Virginia on July 9, 1876 to Columbus and Lucy Gayle Anderton. Bernard was very much present in his mother's letters to his Aunt Mary -- standing by her and telling her what to write, sending his love, being "bad as ever", wanting Aunt Mary to send him a stick of candy in her next letter. Read More	Charles Bernard Anderton was born in Ware Neck, Gloucester County, Virginia on July 9, 1876 to Columbus and Lucy Gayle Anderton. Bernard was very much present in his mother's letters to his Aunt Mary -- standing by her and telling her what to write, sending his love, being "bad as ever", wanting Aunt Mary to send him a stick of candy in her next letter. And later, "Bernard has gone to Sunday School, he is quite a man" (age 8) and in 1884-85, having a lot of trouble with one of his eyes. Occasionally, when Lucy could spare him, he would go up to Urbanna and visit Aunt Mary and Uncle Silas. Bernard was always quick in mathematics and had a "good business head", both excellent qualifications for being a merchant. In 1900 he was living in Ware Neck and working as a clerk in a store. In 1910, both he and his younger brother, Stanley, were clerks in a department store, whatever that meant in those days in that part of the world. Stanley was living with Bernard and his wife. According to his descendents, Bernard "kept store" at Ware Neck for 28 years and was also the postmaster. In 1906, Bernard married Fannie Lee Brown, who tragically died only two months after the wedding. Then, in 1908, he married Mary Lillian Robins of Ware Neck, who was the daughter of James Severn Robins and Ida Belle Brushwood. They moved to Bohannon in Mathews County about 1921, where Bernard continued to "keep store". He went into partnership with his brother Roland, who was in ill health, at Bohannon. Bernard supplemented his income at Bohannon by carrying mail for many years. His routes were from James Store Post Office to Mobjack Post Office and, later, from Foster Post Office to Mobjack. Granddaughter Robin remembers their Bohannon house as being "quite large and I remember being somewhat apprehensive about going to bed upstairs by myself. My mother would often hold my hand until I fell asleep. Once asleep, however, nothing woke me, not even the sound of canning jars falling from the attic above and crashing to the floor near where I slept. I am told that's what happened one morning although I don't remember since everything was cleaned up by the time I awoke." Bernard and Lillian were active members of Emmanuel Methodist Church. Bernard was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and, for a number of years, he was registrar for the local precinct. Lillian was well known for her good cooking and was also an excellent seamstress. Granddaughter Robin remembers a beautiful Easter coat that Lillian made for her. Lillian also made most of the clothes for her daughters when they were growing up. Her sewing slowed down in her later years as she suffered with rheumatoid arthritis for many years before her death. Bernard and Lillian had five children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren by the time of their deaths in 1962 and 1961 respectively. They are buried together in Providence Cemetery.
