Description	:	Mary Virginia Anderton -- born February 6, 1910 in Ware Neck. Virginia attended the Peninsula School after the move to Bohannon. She married Edward Raymond Bassett in 1929. Ray's parents were Edward Martin Bassett and Carrie Virginia Raines. Dr. Raines, spoken of later, was his uncle. He was born June 28, 1903. Ray ran a candy and juke box business and had the reputation of being a big tease. Read More	Mary Virginia Anderton -- born February 6, 1910 in Ware Neck. Virginia attended the Peninsula School after the move to Bohannon. She married Edward Raymond Bassett in 1929. Ray's parents were Edward Martin Bassett and Carrie Virginia Raines. Dr. Raines, spoken of later, was his uncle. He was born June 28, 1903. Ray ran a candy and juke box business and had the reputation of being a big tease. In fact, niece Mary Joan Anderton remembered being driven by her Uncle Ray when suddenly he stopped the car and just sat there. After a while she asked him why they had stopped. He replied, "Don't you see the train going across the tracks!!" – there was no train and no tracks!! He would do the same thing with his boat, claiming that there was a buoy signaling him to stop. Later, Virginia and Ray owned and operated a furniture and appliance store in Mathews Court House – and along with that they ran a bottled gas business, serving more than 200 customers in the county. They eventually sold the gas business to Revere. After Ray died, Virginia continued buy her gas from Revere. Ray died in 1986 and Virginia lived in their house in Mathews Court House, next door to her brother Linwood (called Cotton) – until 2001 when she moved into the Mathews Convalescent Home at age 91. Her nephew, Ralph Anderton, visited her three times a week up until when she died -- on August 5, 2004 at age 94. Virginia and Ray had no children and were members of Emmanuel United Methodist Church at Bohannon.
