Description	:	Mr. Pleasants was born in Boston, was orphaned at ten, and was bound out to learn the ship's carpenter trade. He went to sea and was a ship's carpenter for twelve years. He rose to the position of mate, but due to a lack of education, he could rise no further and left the sea to work as a carpenter on the Eric Canal. In Seneca County, New York he married Sarah Goff. Believing there was opportunity in the west, Mr. Pleasants came to Van Buren County, Iowa, where he kept a hotel in Birmingham. ... In the 1870s he and his sons opened a hardware store in Birmingham known as P and R.W. Pleasants. Pleasants, Elenora Pleasants, Frances Pleasants, and Richard Warren Pleasants. All are linked except Charles, for whom we were unable to find a death record. He was living in Brown County, South Dakota in 1890. Any information is welcome. After Sarah's death in 1861, Mr. Pleasants married Matilda Miller Blanchard, a widow.
