From: The Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati, Ohio, on Tuesday, January 8, 1946, Page 4 RETIRED OHIO LEADER DIES HERE MONDAY 89-Year-Old Attorney Had Served As Senator and Prosecutor Charles Lawyer, 89, who was a state senator in Ohio from 1906 to 1912, died at 3 a.m., yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Duncan Williams, on the Greenwood road. A prominent political figure in Ohio after he was admitted to the bar in 1883, he is given more than two pages in "Representative Man of Ohio," a book of the states out-standing men published in 1908. Lawyer came to Shreveport' about two and one half years ago to live with his daughter and son-in-law Born Dec. 7 1857, In Jefferson Ohio, he was graduated from Michigan university in 1883 and began was a close friend of Clarence Darrow and the two men tried some of practicing law the same year. He their first law cases together. His political career began when he was elected city solicitor in Jefferson in 1884. He -was later named prosecuting attorney In Ashtabula county and served two terms. In 1906 he was elected, to the state senate on the Republican ticket. He served as senator until 1912. While in. the state senate he Introduced a bill calling for the observance of Columbus Day, a holiday which since has been adopted by a number of other states. Lawyer, was a practicing attorney until 17 years ago. The body will remain at the Well man funeral home chapel until 3 p.m. today, and will then be sent to Dal las, Texas, for cremation at the Rest land crematory. The ashes will be returned to Jefferson. Ohio, for burial in the family plot.
