Mahannah, formerly night clerk at the Paddock hotel in this city, who later entered the employ of the Burlington at Wymore as a fireman, has instituted suit for $25,000 damages for injuries received in a collision last winter near Putnam. In referring to the case, the Lincoln Star of last evening says: "Suit for $25,000 for injuries resulting when a boiler burst following a collision, was brought by Charles C. Mahannah, a fireman, against the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad company in district court Wednesday. "Mahannah, according to the petition, was sent out as fireman on the engine of a snow plow that left Wymore on the morning of March 11, 1912, for the purpose of relieving train No. 93, stalled in the deep snow above Putnam. "Mahannah alleges that the crew was falsely informed as to the position of the stalled train, having been told that it was three and three-fourths miles north of Putnam, when it was only three-fourths of a miles north. "As a result of this mis-information, he alleges that the snow plow and engine ran headon into the other train, which was negligently unguarded and unflagged. "As a result of the collision, the boiler on engine No. 128, the engine of the snow plow, burst and covered Mahannah with boiling water and steam. MAHANNAH WEDS AT BRIDGEPORT Announcement has been received here of the marriage of Charles C. Mahannah of Lincoln, a former resident of Beatrice, to Miss Mabel McKinney, which occurred May 1 at the home of the bride's brother at Bridgeport. The young couple will be at home at Lincoln after May 15. Mr. Mahannah was formerly clerk at the Paddock hotel here, and later entered the employ of the Burlington at Wymore. He was badly injured in a collision which occurred south of Putnam two years ago. Says Husband Took Long Joy-Rides With Her and Finally Forced Wife To Leave. Mrs. Mabel B. Mahannah, wife of Charles C. Mahannah, of Normal, charges Miss Freda Griess, a local stenographer for the Burlington railroad, with alienating the affections of her husband, in a suit for $10,000 damages from Miss Griess filed Wednesday, and also in a, suit for maintenance filed against her husband. Automobile rides, lasting until midnight, enjoyed by Mahannah and Miss Griess while Mrs. Mahannah stayed at home or with her mother in Lincoln, are told In the petitions and it is alleged Miss Griess drank intoxicating liquors with Mahannah and by her arts and seductive ways, bestowed her love upon the husband, won his affections and caused him to drive his wife from their home and destroyed Mahannah's business, all to the damage of 10,000 to the wife. In her petition against her husband, Mrs. Mahannah relates how they were married May 1, 1913 and lived happily at Normal, where Mahannah was engaged In the grocery business. The home was congenial and the wife declares that she did all in her power to make the home life pleasant. After a time, however, her husband met Miss Griess, who Is described In the petition as 26 or 27 years old and forgetting his duties as a husband, permitted Miss Griess to entice and lead him away from his home, it is asserted. Said Husband Neglected Her Early this summer, the wife declares, Mahannah began to neglect his wife and his home, became cold, disagreeable, abusive and cruel, would leave her at home or take her to her mothers In Lincoln and would leave her while he took Miss Griess out on long automobile rides. On September 16, it is charged, he took his wife to her mother's home and refused to take her again to his home In Normal. She went there of her own accord and remained a week, but the husband refused to live with her. He has since removed their household goods and his wife's apparel from the Normal home and put them in a place unknown to the wife, and rented the Normal house, she charges. Mahannah has a good business and is making money, his wife asserts, but she declares that he claims to have sold his business to his brother or father or both, in order to defeat her out of her rights. This pretended sale is fraudulent, Mrs. Mahannah maintains. She asks the court to compel her husband to pay her at least $50 a month, as well as to pay into court a reasonable amount so that she may prosecute her suit. Mrs. Mahannah states that she is in poor health and unable to support herself by her own labor. ==================================================== The Nebraska State Journal (Lincoln, NE), Thursday, March 9, 1916; pg. 10 Mrs. Mabel B. Mahannah testified in district court yesterday afternoon that when she found a lady's handkerchief and hairpin in the automobile of her husband, Charles C. Mahannah, she became suspicious and accused him of having had a woman out riding. After that they did not get along so well and she went to the home of her mother to live. She is now suing for separate maintenance. Mrs. Mahannah testified that after the separation she, in company with Clark Jeary and an officer, watched the defendant and on two different occasions saw him go to the home of Miss Frieda Griese (sic). Once he stayed in the house for at least three-quarters of an hour, the curtains being drawn. Later it was galled that the defendant and Miss Griese (sic) came out and went away in the automobile. Mrs. Mahannah is now suing Miss Griese (sic) for damages, alleging that she alienated the affections of her husband. It is alleged that Mahannah was seen to leave the Griese (sic) home rather late at night. When the defendant testified his chief charge against the plaintiff was that she constantly nagged him. He said that she had required him to take off his shoes before entering the house and that she raised a disturbance because when he was smoking some ashes fell on the carpet. He was required to remove the offensive substance, but the nagging was kept up for several days. The defendant denied that he had taken any woman out riding while he was living with his wife, but said that he had loaned the car to friends, who might have done so. He knew nothing of the handkerchief and hairpin until they were called to his attention by the plaintiff. Mr. Mahannah stated that the first serious difficulty he had with his wife was when she told him that before their marriage she had sustained improper relations with other men. The parties lived at Normal, where the defendant was formerly engaged in the mercantile business. They were married in May, 1913. They separated last September. ================================================= Lincoln Journal Star (Lincoln, NE), Saturday, May 6, 1916; pg. 2 MAHANNAH MAKES OBJECTION Declares That Amount of Alimony Is Excessive Charles G. (sic) Mahannah, from whom Mabel B. Mahannah recently obtained a decree of divorce, has filed in district court a motion to modify the terms of the same in respect to the amount of alimony and attorney's fee to be paid plaintiff. He was ordered to pay Mrs. Mahannah's lawyer $75 and to pay her $20 her month. He says that he cannot afford to pay this much and that it is unjust that he should be required to. He declares that he is physically incapacitated and that his only employment is that of a waiter in a dairy lunch room; he has an equity of about $500 in a piece of property. He had an interest in a store which he sold for $1,000 this being the extent of his resources. It is declared by the plaintiff that the evidence adduced at the trial showed that the separation of the parties was through the fault of the plaintiff, whose conduct had been such as to entirely disrupt the marriage relation. Furthermore, she is continuously employed, earning as much as she did before the marriage and fully as competent to support herself. The allegation is made that no misconduct or cause for separation upon his part was shown at the trial and that he is entitled to a decree of divorce against her.
