Charles Francis Gilbert was born in Coon Rapids, Ia., December 4, 1871 and had he lived till Wednesday this week would have been 64 years old. He was the son of Jas. M. and Mary A. Gilbert and as a boy he came here with them in 1881 and resided here continuously since, a period of 54 years. He was educated in the Creighton public school, was a member of the Baptist church since boyhood and lived a useful, Christian life. There remains no doubt in the minds of his loved ones and friends that he has met his Saviour and has entered eternal rest. On January 1, 1901 he was wedded to Ida R. Shanklin. To this union five children were born, three of whom died in infancy. the other two, both sons, Alfred M. and Frances, are at home. Besides his widow and sons, the immediate relatives surviving are; three brothers, Arthur Gilbert of Dawn, Mo.; Alvin Gilbert of Tacoma, Wash. and Louis Gilbert of Norfolk and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Green of Creighton; Miss Cynthia Gilbert of Des Moines and Miss Nora Gilbert of Omaha. Funeral services were held at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Federated church Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. Duncan McPherson, pastor of the Baptist church at Norfolk conducted services. Music was provided by Edward Dunlap and Charles Earl of Sioux City, nephews of the deceased. Flower bearers were Mrs. Jas. Squire and Miss Anna Hall and pallbearers were Messrs. Blank, Cave, Montgomery, McKown, Guy Benedict and August Johnson. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery. Extracted from: The Creighton News 5 Dec 1935 Birth year does not match grave marker.
