Funeral services were held in Villisca at 2 p.m., Wednesday in the Methodist Church and were conducted by the Rev. C. F. Smith of Red Oak, a former pastor of the Holmes Chapel Church. He was assisted by the Rev. Martin H. Keast, pastor of the Villisca Methodist Church. Musical selections by the Villisca male quartet, were given and pall bearers were Charles, Earl, Ira, Clarence, and Bernard Moates and Clint Cooney. Burial was made in the Villisca Cemetery. Mr. boats was born April 5, 1859 in Lee County, Illinois and came to Franklin County, Iowa in the winter of 1868. In the fall of 1871, he moved to Montgomery County with his parents and his two brothers and four sisters. He has been a resident of this county ever since. His death was the first to the family of seven children of which he was the second child. He was married December 24, 1882 to Ida McCue at the home of his father, J. P. Moates. The bride and groom established their new home on the farm now owned by C. A. Danielson, near the pioneer home of Mr. Moates’ parents. Six children were born to Mr and Mrs. Moates. They are Chars. A. of Plainview, Nebraska, and Mrs. Mary Cooney, William Earl, Ira J. and Clarence M. all of this community, and Orie who died November 24, 1918. On January 1904, the family moved to Villisca, whee Mr. Moates and his sons operated a livery barn. However, he enjoyed life on the farm and on March 1, 1906, moved to the farm near Sciola, where the family now resides. As a pioneer settler in this vicinity, Mr. Moates endured may hardships as did his neighbors of the early days. Thirty years ago he joined the Methodist Church at Homes Chapel and was an ardent supporter of that church until ti disbanded when he transferred his membership to the Villisca Methodist Church. Mr. Moates was a charter member of the Modern Woodman Lodge at Morton Mills and later transferred his membership to Villisca. He is survived by his widow, five children, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four sisters who are Mrs. Ket Thrasher of Meadow Grove, Nebraska, Mrs. Allie Aitchison of Atkinson, Nebraska, Mrs. Lulu Focht of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Mrs. Hattie Focht of Villisca, and two brothers, W.
