Born about 1849, Charley was friend and 'partner in crime' with 'Vos' H. C. Shanafelt. In 1872, Vos made at least one trip to Texas. Tho' unknown if Charley went on that trip, documented family interviews tell that Vos Shanafelt and Charlie Mills were Gamblers on the Mississippi River. Vos, and possibly Charley, sold sewing machines to finance their trips. The young adventurous bachelors Vos Shanafelt and Charley Mills left Mooresville, Indiana for Texas around 1873. Vos' diary indicates they spent time in Fort Worth and in Waco before they came upon ‘the prettiest land I ever saw' in Jack/Young County where both bought adjoining land. Vos frequently notes about Charley in his diary....lost roan, CHM rode 10 miles before found...Mills harrowed...Mills wrote 6 letters...Charley hunting for molasses. They talk about not seeing another human for five days straight; real lonesome; working on house; killed two snakes; slept with a mouse and crickets last night. Around 1878, Vos' parents along with Charley's brother John, head to Texas; they too bought and settled on adjoining land with Charley and Vos. The Mills, John and family and Charley, tired of the uncertainty in the uncivilized Texas, long for home. In 1885, they head back to Indiana. Back home, Charley marries Fannie (Worth) Hunt on 15 Feb 1888. Fannie was the daughter of Alexander and Harriet (Glasscock) Worth; and, was the young widow of Willis Hunt. Fannie was the younger sister to Alice (Worth) Sheets who was Vos' sweetheart who tired of waiting for him while he was in Texas had married his cousin John D. Sheets. After the marriage failed, the former sweethearts, Vos and Alice marry in Texas in 1894. With this marriage, the good friends and partners in crime became brother-in-laws. Charles and Fannie never had children. They spent most of their life in Mooresville, Indiana but, for reasons unknown, left for Florida in their last years. God Speed Charley, God Speed!
