"Doc" Ragland Passes Away After a Residence of Over Fifty Years In County Hundreds of friends throughout Chouteau county and Montana will be grieved to learn of the death of Charles H. (Doc) Ragland, who passed away at the St. Clare hospital in this city after only a comparatively short illness. While Mr. Ragland had been in rather poor health for the past three or four months his condition was not considered serious. He was taken to the local hospital just a week prior to his passing and gradually grew worse until the final summons came at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Death was due to uremic poisoning. For the past 50 years "Doc" Ragland has been a familiar figure in this county and city and was well known to every stockman in this county, as well as the surrounding county. He came to Fort Benton and Montana in 1887 and has taken an active part in the development of this county. In 1889 he organized the Benton Sheep company, which he managed for a number of years, and built that company up to one of the prominent sheep companies of this section of the state. Retiring from the company he later engaged in buying and selling sheep for himself and for the last few years has represented eastern wool buyers and has purchased a good share of the wool production in the county for some years. He was engaged in this business when his fatal illness overtook him. Charles H. Ragland was born in Paris, Missouri, on March 27, 1865, and passed away at St. Clare hospital in this city on July 31, 1937, aged 72 years, five months and four days. He came to this city in 1887, and was united in marriage to Idabel McLeish, of Appleton, Wis., a sister of A. E. McLeish, of this city, in Aug. 1894. To this union nine children were born, three at the ranch at Harwood Lake where Mr. Ragland was engaged in the sheep business and the others in Fort Benton. Of the nine children born, eight are still living and seven are here to attend the last rites. These are: Mrs. George Daniels, of Deer Lodge; Mrs. C. A. Derrer, of San Diego; Mrs. Forrest Horn, of Deer Lodge; Mrs. Drew Knight, of Los Angeles; Mrs. Gerald Woodahl, of Great Falls; Charles H. Ragland, Jr., of Encinitas, Calif.; and Benton Ragland, of this city. The other daughter, Mrs. Leland Greene, of Porterville, Calif., was unable to come. Mr. Ragland also leaves two brothers, Harry and Roland, of Great Falls, and five other brothers and sisters; eleven grandchildren and numerous friends throughout Montana, who will mourn the passing of this pioneer resident. Mrs. Ragland passed away in San Diego, Calif., in 1930 while on a visit with her daughters there. Funeral services were held from the Louther chapel in Fort Benton on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Joel R. Benton, pastor of the Christian church, of this city. The services were attended by a large number of friends throughout the county. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
