Read More	The Belleville (Kansas) Telescope, September 23, 1948 Charles Houdek, son of John and Anna Houdek, was born in Czecholslovakia, May 1, 1860, and departed this life at his home in Compton, Cal., August 11, 1948, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 10 days. When a small child he immigrated to America with his parents, 10 brothers and sisters, and lived for a long time in Cedar Rapids, Ia., later moving to Kansas, settling on a homestead two and one-half miles southwest of Munden where he grew to manhood. He was one of a family of 18 children and endured the hardships of pioneer days. All his brothers and sisters lived, were married and reared families. At the age of 17 years, he went to work in a store in Hubbell, Neb., later worked in a store in Munden and then in Cuba. After his marriage he purchased and operated a general merchandise store until about 28 years ago when he sold out and with his family moved to Compton, Cal., where he resided until his departure. In the year 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Mollie Hull of Cuba. To this union five children were born. One son, Willie passed on in childhood. His wife died 22 years ago. He leaves to mourn his passing one son, George Houdek, three daughters, Miss Jean Houdek, Mrs. Viola Kremmerer, Mrs. John Stockwell, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. George Houdek and one son-in-law, John Stockwell, all of Compton, Cal.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Jerome Houdek of Munden; two sisters, Mrs. Kathrine Moravek of Munden and Mrs. Frank Swiercinsky of Belleville, and many other relatives and friends. His sunny disposition and cheerful ways endeared him to all who knew him. He was highly respected and will be greatly missed. Funeral services were held from the Moreland's Mortuary chapel in Compton, Cal., August 13 with Mrs. Robina Boyne of the Christian Science church officiation. Interment was made in Angeles Abby Mausoleum by the side of his wife.
