The people of this vicinity were very much shocked and surprised last Sunday morning when the news reached the city that Charles Swanson had been found dead on the floor of his home near town that morning at 8 o'clock. By his side was found a cup that upon examiniation was found to contain strychnine. Mr. Swanson was a man of middle age and was a hard working and industrious farmer. He was quiet and unassuming in manner and always apparently looked on the bright side of his life hence the surprise that he should be the cause of his own death. The coroner was immediately summoned and the verdict of the inquest was a clear case of suicide, that he had deliberately taken his own life. Domestic troubles are supposed to have been the cause for the rash act. He and his wife had been quarrelling the evening before and it is supposed that this was indirectly the cause of the suicide. Mr. Swanson's sister is a telephone girl at Stanton and she heard the news going over the wire, the first inkling she had of his death. She swooned as quickly as they caught the import of the message. No arrangements have been made for the funeral. Mr. Swanson is well known in this vicinity having lived for some years on the farm three miles east of Essex. Information found in The Essex Independent, February 1908 The body of Charles Swanson who committed suicide at his home near Essex last Sunday morning was taken to Emerson last Tuesday evening where he was laid to rest. Four of his brother-in-laws from Omaha, came down last evening to see about the adjustments of various financial affairs. They wanted to see about the appointment of an administrator and to arrange about a public sale to sell his personal property. Mr. Swanson had no brothers, but four sisters.
