Description	:	Carl Johan Holm/Charles John Holmes was born June 22, 1872 in Alsheda, Jonk, Sweden and died Thursday, August 3, 1949 at the Murphey Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 77 years. He came to America with his parents at the age of six and has lived in this community since that time. On May 1, 1887, he was confirmed in the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman, but later transferred his membership to the St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex. On March 21, 1908, he was united in marriage with Bessie Johnson. To this union twelve children were born.... Read More	Carl Johan Holm/Charles John Holmes was born June 22, 1872 in Alsheda, Jonk, Sweden and died Thursday, August 3, 1949 at the Murphey Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 77 years. He came to America with his parents at the age of six and has lived in this community since that time. On May 1, 1887, he was confirmed in the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman, but later transferred his membership to the St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex. On March 21, 1908, he was united in marriage with Bessie Johnson. To this union twelve children were born. Two daughters, Helen who died in 1925 and Dorothy V., who died in 1940, prededed him in death. He is survived by his wife and ten children, Elmer of Shenandoah, Bernard of Essex, Clifford of Shenandoah, Ray of Essex, Norman of Atlantic, Ted of Red Oak, and Paul of Essex, Mrs. Arnold (Amy) Bruland of Albion, Nebraska, Mrs. Stanley (Pauline) Frizzell of Omaha, Nebraska, and Miss Fern Holmes of Essex. He is also survived by one brother, Fred, and two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Moore and Mrs. Joseph Johnson, all of Essex. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes would have celebrated their golden anniversary next spring. As a member of St. John's church, Mr. Holmes served as trustee, completing his father's term, and serving in his own capacity. He also held the position of trustee of Pierce Township at the time of his death. He retired from farming eleven years ago and has been in poor health for the past three years. Before his death, he requested that his six sons act as pallbearers and the seventh son, Paul, escort Mrs. Holmes at the service.
