OBITUARY Died, at his home in the east part of town, on Sunday evening, October 23, 1904, after a long and bitter illness, Charles Huglin, aged 70 years, 3 months, 28 days. Charles Huglin was born in Stockholm, Sweden, June 25, 1834, his baptismal name being Carl Johan Quiskey. He was the only son of Alexander and Ulrika Eleanor Quiskey, the father, a former sailor on the British war ship "Oxford" being the English consul at Stockholm at the time of the son's birth. The father was mysteriously assassinated on his way from the king's palace, July 4, 1836, and the broken-hearted wife passed away of grief two days later, leaving the two year old son alone upon the mercies of the world. He was cared for at the national orphanage at Stockholm until he was six years of age, when he was adopted into the family of Isaac Peterson without knowing anything of his parentage. In 1858 he came to America and first located as a farm hand near New Sweden, Iowa. In 1861 he enlisted as a volunteer in the Eleventh Ohio Battery, and served his country four years during the Civil War. He was under General Grant and Rosecrans during the most important battles of the West. On September 19, 1862, during the battle of Iuka, he received three wounds, one in the left side, and one in each of his legs, and was confined in the hospital at Jackson, Tenn., ten weeks, after which he returned to his regiment, and took active part in the battles of Corinth, Shiloh, Island No. 10, and the siege of Vicksburg, besides over twenty other minor battles and skirmishes. At Duvall's Bluff, Arkansas, he was taken seriously ill, and was again contained to the hospital for seven weeks. He never fully recovered his health from the illness and the wounds of the war. He was mustered out of the services at Columbus, Ohio, October 23, 1865, and again became a private citizen of the country and the flag he served so well. Thirty-nine years to the day after mustering out of this service, he was mustered out of life's service, and retired to that Heavenly country, where the Cross is the emblem of freedom, peace, and eternal life, and Christ the mighty captain. Upon enlisting in the army, he changed his name to Charles Huglin, by which name he was known to his death. After leaving the army, he began farming in Illinois, being married at Andover, November 27, 1867, to Miss Christina L. Swanson, who preceded him to the better land on February 26 last. In 1873, they moved to Greenwood, Nebraska, where they lived three years, coming back to Iowa September 14, 1876, and living in Dayton and vicinity ever since. God abundantly blessed Mr. Huglin and his devoted wife during their life together. Ten children were born to them, six sons and four daughters. Alfred, Nathaniel and Esther died in infancy. Those now living to mourn the loss of kind and loving father are Albert, Luther, Oscar and wife Callie and son Maurice, Gilbert and wife Caroline, Tillie and Ida, all living honored and respected lives. Mr. Huglin was an active member of the Lutheran church at Dayton, and lived devoted to the cause of the Master. His funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon of last week from the Lutheran church, his pastor, Rev. Christenson, conducting the services, and was laid to rest in Dayton cemetery beside the remains of his wife. Many beautiful floral emblems bespoke the esteem in which he was held. He was a member of Capt. Dowd Post, G. A. R., and was laid to rest with the impressive service of that organization. A brave citizen soldier in time of his country's need, Mr. Huglin lived an upright soldier citizen in its days of peace, respected, honored, loved by all. He was ever a friend and a neighbor to all who knew him. He lived a life of industry, and did his share towards the development of this region, where nearly thirty years of his life were spent. A host of friends of the sorrowing family sympathize with them in their loss.
