We walked to town for groceries, we walked to dances, danced till the sun was coming up, then walked home, walked behind the horses to do all the field work, walked to church, that was about 10 or 15 miles, and one man in the real early days walked clear to Iowa City for groceries, and then, of course, he had to carry them all home. Most people had a team of horses, but used them only for farm work. My dad and mom said we must let the horses rest at the end of the day so they can work again tomorrow. They said it was better if the people get tired, they are easier to handle. If they go to town with a dime in their pocket, and full of energy, and have a beer, then there may be trouble, but if people are tired from walking they won't try anything. I can remember one medication we used when I was little. That was skunk oil. They would rub it on your chest, for a cold. You had to first catch a skunk, you could sell the fur, and we used the lard for cold medicine. It smelled real bad, but not like a skunk would smell.
