For 13 years at the side of his dad, FRED GILMOUR, who died in 1928, LOWE learned the grocery business at GILMOUR and GILMOUR Grocery, 310 N. Pearl, where Woods Hardware is today. He continued to work for TUCK GILMOUR after his Ellensburg High School 1934 graduation, marriage to his high school sweetheart, IRENE St. JOHN, and the birth of his three children. With World War II in progress, LOWE found it necessary to venture out into other fields. He set chokers for Archie and son Robert Kennedy in the Swauk. He loaded steel onto ships working as a high rigger at the Vancouver shipyard. He worked 10 hours a day, six days a week for two years on the crew digging the underground fuel storage for the Navy in Pearl Harbor. He mentioned being underground was the hardest job of his life. He came back to Ellensburg and requested a draft notice into the Army. Boot camp at Fort Walters, Texas and the infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia. That was 1945 and peace was declared, World War II was over and LOWE received an honorable discharge. Years later LOWE chose to work for the Sunshine Silver Mining Co. in Idaho going underground a second time just long enough to refresh his memory - he decided to return to Ellensburg in 1955, to seek employment again in the grocery business above ground. His first love was always the grocery industry. He worked for the family owned and operated grocers in Washington and Idaho and Alaska. In 1955, he came back home to Ellensburg to work as produce manager for Vail Von Wagoner at Vail's Market, Capitol Avenue and Anderson Street, He and VIRGINIA HOLMES were married in October 1958. His dream of owning a store came true in 1958, when LOWE and VIRGINIA purchased Wippel's Grocery at Fifth Avenue and Railroad Street. There at LOWE's LUCKY DOLLAR, together they served, loved and enjoyed their many customers. They always enjoyed the kids being around, customer's kids and grand kids. In 1960, he was one of eight GILMOUR's who were involved in the grocery industry; now there is only one who is delighted to teach and advise: his grandson ROBBE (Robin) GILMOUR at Mr. G's Grocery, Eighth Avenue and Chestnut Street. LOWE's career in the grocery industry came to an abrupt end early Dec. 4, 1972, when [his store THE LUCKY DOLLAR] burned to the ground. He was only 57 and not ready to quit working, but not sure what he would do. Joe Kelleher invited him to sell cars at Kelleher Motors. He accepted Joe's offer and as his dad had taught him he was honest, trustworthy and kind to all he met on or off the job till retirement at the age of 68. His wife VIRGINIA preceded him in death on Sept. 24, 1990 and his daughter, NANCY (Marv) LUND on Jan. 27, 1973. Survivors include GARY (Jeanette0 GILMOUR, MERLE (Marylou) GILMOUR, KEN (Peggy) HOLMES, HAROLD (Shirley) HOLMES; 17 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. June at Affordable Funeral Care. Burial will be at High Valley Cemetery with military honors at graveside service at 10 a.m. June 10, 2003. A celebration of life memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church on the Vantage Highway."
