Read More	Charles Phelps, age 91, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove. Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 19, 2011, at Faith Community Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. Burial will be in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Born January 21, 1920, in Elihu, Kentucky, Charles Richard Phelps was the son of Chester and Gertie (Vaughn) Phelps. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1939, attended Iowa State University at Ames, and served in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge he took up farming. On December 31, 1944, he was united in marriage to Betty Vickery. The couple engaged in farming in the Ida Grove area for 37 years and retired to Ida Grove in October, 1982. Charles was a lifelong member of the Winebrenner Church of God, now known as Faith Community Church, in Ida Grove. He enjoyed playing football during his high school years, was a member of the Ida Grove Masonic Lodge and the Sioux City Consistory, as well as a member of the American Legion. Survivors include one daughter, Susan (Tom) Rongitsch of Edina, MN; a son-in-law, Ron Winterhof of Alta; a granddaughter, Christine (Matt) Wunschel of Ida Grove; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Stefan Wunschel; a brother-in-law, George (Lorrie) Vickery of Holstein; a brother-in-law, Warren Neal of Arthur; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2009 and daughter Janice Winterhof in 1997. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Holstein Good Samaritan Society and at Morningside Care Center for their loving care of Charles.
