Rowe called to his wife and told her that a weight was bearing down on his chest, and said he was in great pain. Mrs. Rowe went to him, and almost instantly he died. He had been ill for two years with what was supposed to be throat trouble, but the physicians pronounced later to be Bright's Disease, affecting the throat sympathetically. He had been in constant pain for several months and had been able to sleep only by the aid of opiates. Recent hot weather had a bad effect on him and the end had been expected for some time. He will be buried by the Masonic Lodge from the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Cemetery. Mr. Rowe was born in Cornwall, England, in 1842. His parents immigrated to America when he was an infant and he spent most of his boyhood in Illinois. He came to Montana in 1867, in company with his brother, Wm. Rowe, Sr. of Fort Benton. The young men spent the year in placer mining near Helena and instead of making the stake that they had expected, they lost all the capital they had brought from home. The following year both of them took service with the Wells Fargo Stage Company and Charles Rowe drove over that part of the road called the "Bird Tail" divide. The Indians were troublesome in those days and the stage drivers had many thrilling experiences. In the winter of 1868, Mr. Rowe came to Fort Benton and opened a saloon which he ran until the following year when he bought out the famous Overland Hotel. This he conducted until 1876. He then sold out and engaged in cattle ranching on property 10 miles below Benton on the river. The same year he was married to Miss Brinkman by whom he had two sons. His wife died in 1881 and both boys died within a week of diphtheria in the winter of 1885. Mr. Rowe again entered the hotel business after a few years spent in ranching. In 1890 he closed up the Overland and bought out the management of the Grand Union, which he conducted until 1899, when he again moved to the ranch on account of ill health. In July 1891, he married Miss Anna M. Martin, to whom five children have been born. While Mr. Rowe was never very active in politics he was elected mayor of Fort Benton for five successive terms. In 1899 an affection of the throat began to trouble him. It gradually grew worse until his sufferings were ended in death. He was a prominent mason belonging to the Benton Lodge No. 25 of Fort Benton. Both parents were born in England and died in IL.
