He was 93. Mr. Butler, born on the family farm between Edwards Ferry and White's Ferry, on the Potomac, was a member of one of the olderst families in Montgomery County. His father and an uncle went off to war for the Confederacy and his grandfather went along to look after them. Mr. Butler had farmed his 296 acres near Dickerson since 1911, and was active in managing his grain fields and feeding Hereford cattle for market until his health began to fail last Thanksgiving. A lifelong Democrat, he told a son, George R. Butler, "I don't know whether I'll live to see Kennedy inaugurated, but I've got him in there anyhow!" He died on Inauguration Day. Mr. Butler was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman until his years began to tell. He was also a horse fancier and a regular $2 better who followed closely the results at Bowie, Laurel, and other tracks. He went to court his wife, the former Hattie A. Bruner, of Frederick County, on horseback. Mrs. Butler died in 1949 after more than 50 years of marriage. Mr. Butler was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's Church, Barnesville. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Spencer Fisher and Mrs. J. Carl Burner, both of Barnesville, and Mrs. John Kimmerling, of Poolesville; and a son, George R. Butler of Poolesville. He also leaves a sister, Miss Lula Butler and a brother, Rosser E., both of Poolesville; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A Requiem Mass was said Tuesday at St. Mary's Church. Burial was in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville. Obituary The News (Frederick, MD) January 23, 1961 Charles Spates Butler, 93, died Friday evening at his home near Dickerson. Mr. Butler was a lifelong resident of the community and a prominent farmer. He was a life member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Barnesville, and had been quite active until the past year. Mr. Butler is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Frances Fisher and Mrs. Mary Burner of Barnesville and Mrs. Jennie Kimmerling of Poolesville and one son, George R. Butler of Dickerson. Friends may call at the Hilton Funeral Home in Barnesville where rosary will be recited on Monday at 8 p.m. Requiem mass will be offered on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Interment in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville. William B. Hilton, funeral director.
