JOHNSONVILLE SOLDIER SAYS GIs SAD IN LOSS OF M'ARTHUR To The Editor: I am a man, or you might still call me a kid, now in Korea trying to help defend our country. We, the men in Korea, who are fighting would like for the people back home to know just how badly we feel toward having our commanding general taken away from us. He not only fell toward us as a general in command, but he also took us as his children, and most of all, we took him as our father. Now don't get me wrong about what I am saying because I am not saying that our government isn't being run right. It's that we all loved him as we would love a father. I am from Johnsonville in Florence County and I feel that you, too, feel the same way that we do. All of my life I lived on a farm until I enlisted in the armed forces where I took my basic training at Fort Jackson. From there I went to Fort Benning, Ga., and stayed until July 3, 1949. I was then sent to Korea where I served with the Seventh Regiment in the First Cavalry Division. I spent four months on the front lines and was wounded in action on September 12, 1949. After returning from Osaka General Hospital in Japan, I went back to the Cavalry and from there was transferred to the Quartermaster Corps. From here I hope pretty soon to go on rotation plan back to the States. Cpl. Charles W. Marsh Somewhere in Korea Published in the Morning News, May 9, 1951 PAMPLICO - Charles W. (Pipe Man) Marsh, 79, to be with his Lord and Savior on March 1, 2011 after a long battle with COPD he passed away peacefully at his home. He was born in Marion County, the oldest son of the late W. J. and Mary Lovell Marsh. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church, a life member of the DAV Post 72 Darlington, SC and avid Race Car Fan. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He was wounded in action on September 12, 1950 and was awarded the Purple Heart and several Bronze Stars. He leaves behind his wife of 56 years Josephine Haynes Marsh of the home; daughter, Wanda (Larry) Flowers of Pamplico; brother, Jimmy Wayne (Anne) Marsh of Johnsonville; sister, Mary Frances Carraway of Hemingway; 2 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step-son, Billy Ray Miller; and a brother, Sammy Marsh. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2011 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway with burial in the Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
