On Monday after dinner, Charles Watters started with three of his sons, Johnny, James and Lester, across Hickory creek to put up hay. The boys suggested that it was too deep but the father insisted that it was not, so they drove into the raging water. The wagon became uncoupled, the hayrack floated off, the best one of the horses was drowned, while the other horse broke loose and got out. The father with Johnny and James were drowned while Charles Lester got off and helped to spread the alarm. Willis and Ethan Allen were standing on the opposite bank watching and they also helped to scatter the news of the drowning. Sam Crawford was the first man on the scene. He hastened to get other men and the rescue party began work. Shortly after 1 o'clock the father and one son were found. The news was sent over the country on the wonderful telephone. A rescue party from McCune wen out about 8 o'clock p.m. and with lanterns and ? they searched (sic) Ernie Munroe about 11 o'clock discovered the last one of the three. On Tuesday at 11 a.m. a large crowd gathered to attend the funeral services at the family residence about six miles northwest of McCune, conducted by W.C. Willey. Charles Watters was born in Pike Co., Illinois, Nov.22, 1846. Died Aug. 7, 1905. Aged 58 years, 9 months and 15 days. He married Miss Mary F. Aber in Pike Co. Ill, May 11th, 1876. Five boys and two girls were born to this union. They moved to Missouri then to Kansas. (an unreadable sentence) He leaves behind to mourn him a wife, four brothers, two sisters, ? daughters, and three sons besides other relatives and friends. Johnny Watters was born in Barton Co. Mo. March 16, 1890, aged 15 years, 4 months, 21 days. James G Watters was born in Barton Co. Mo. May 6, 1892, aged 13 yrs, 3 months and one day. They will be missed by their relatives and friends. How sad to think of them well on Monday and on Tuesday they were all in their graves. Men and women from all over the country attended the funeral. A profusion of flowers, and bouquets were presented by the many loyal hearted women who attended. A large crowd gathered to help dig the grave and it was dug wide so that the three coffins would go side by side and they were thus placed in the McCune Cemetery, Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1905 The Parsons Sun reported: On Monday, August 7th, Henry Waters (error- Charles Waters) and his two sons, were drowned about six miles west and one-half mile north of McCune. They were on their way to a place where they were to haul hay, and in attempting to ford Hickory creek, the hay frame was washed off of the wagon, throwing the occupants into the water. After struggling for sometime, the father and the two sons were drowned, while a younger boy succeeded In grasping a branch of a tree, and by climbing up this, he finally escaped. The alarm was given immediately and a search for the bodies was begun. They were all found within a short time, also the body of one of the horses. The remains were interred in the McCune cemetery.
