Mr. Rieck died on February 7, 2003 at Birchwood Health Care Center in Forest Lake, Minnesota. He was 87. The son of Emil and Jeanette Rieck, he was born on September 29, 1915, and grew up on the Platte River near Lewellen. He attended school in Lewellen. In the late 1930's, he worked as a trucker, hauling cattle. In 1939, he worked in Alaska on the trans-Alaska railroad. By the early 1940's, he was back in Nebraska, working on the family farm. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, Rieck, like many young men of the time, volunteered for military service. He entered the Marines in February of 1942, and was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. He was a platoon sergeant with an amphibious tractor battalion and controlled an "alligator" landing boat that moved Marines from ships to shore. He took part in several amphibious landings, including the U.S. invasions of Tarawa, Saipan. Rieck received the Bronze Star for service on Tarawa, where Marines suffered heavy losses in November of 1943. He made many trips for ship to shore while under heavy fire from Japanese forces on Tarawa during the battle. Rieck's Marine Corps service ended in October of 1945, and he returned to Lewellen. On November 28, 1945, he married Vera Lee of Lewellen. The couple dated briefly prior to the war, but wrote to each other during the war years when Chet was in the South Pacific and Vera, an army nurse, was in Europe. The newly married couple lived in Lewellen, and after starting a family, they later moved to a small house on the farm, and eventually to the main house. With the passing of his parents in 1958, the farming operation ended, and the couple moved to a rented farm near Brule, Nebraska. In 1960, the Rieck family moved to Minnesota. Mr. Rieck was offered a job in a fiberglass plant near St. Paul. They purchased a home in Wyoming, Minnesota, along with a poultry ranch operation. For the next four years, he continued his work with the fiberglass plant, and ran the poultry business that had 4,000 laying hens. Two days a week, he would deliver eggs to accounts in the metro area. When a fire knocked out the fiberglass plant in North St. Paul, the decision was made to locate the plant in Wyoming, Minnesota. He bought out his partner in 1968, and eventually moved the fiberglass plant to. the Wyoming Industrial Park. Now in it's third home, the business, "Sunrise Fiberglass Corporation", continues today under the direction of Chet's sons, Barney and Danny Rieck. Mr. Rieck is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vera; four children, Byron "Barney" and Karen Rieck, and Danny and Colleen Rieck, of Wyoming, Minnesota; Suzanne and Gary Newsome, Bumpass, Virginia and Nikki and Benny Ray Bailey, Hind-man, Kentucky; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sister, Edna Brassfield of Phoenix and Arlene Huwaldt of Scottsbluff; nieces, nephews and many friends. Chet was preceded in death by his parents, an older brother, Don, of Forest Grove, Oregon and a sister, Dorothy Brown, of Sunnyvale, California. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Rieck get Letter from Their Son Chet Garden County News, Oshkosh, Nebraska, Thursday, January 6, 1944 The following letter was received by Mr. and Mrs. Emil Rieck from their son Chet, who is somewhere in the South Pacific: Dearest Folks: I know you have been worrying because I haven't written before but under the circumstances it was quiet impossible. You have perhaps been wondering the reason for all this, but if you have followed the 2nd division in the newspapers you will know the whole story. After leaving New Zealand where we had been stationed for the past several months, we spent about a month aboard ship enroute to the Gilbert Islands where we played a leading role in the storing of Tarawa and I might say if I never see anymore war I'll feel I've had my share in this one. We received many sacks of mail and packages the first day we arrived in our new rest camp. We are still working trying to get settled here, and I'll write more son. Love, Chet. CPL Chester R.
