McFarland Succumbs Here Saturday After Short Illness. Mrs. C. E. McFarland passed from this life at her home in Syracuse at 9:40 a.m. on Saturday morning February 13, 1932, after two week’s illness. She had been failing in health for the past few months and for two weeks has been under the care of a nurse. She had reached the age of 80 years and 13 days. She came to Nebraska City with her husband and parents in October 1873 where they lived until the spring of 1878, when they moved to a farm near Syracuse where they lived until the spring of 1888. They then moved to Syracuse and have since made their home here. She was one of the true pioneers of Otoe county and has seen Syracuse grow from a struggling village to a thriving little city and has taken part in many of the events of the growing village. Chloe Elizabeth Buchanan was born near Woodsfield, Monroe county, Ohio, January 31, 1852. She was married to John G. McFarland, at Woodsfield October 17, 1872. To this union were born four children, Jennie (Eaton), who passed away a number of years ago; Etson also deceased. Her husband died several years ago in Syracuse. The surviving children are John H. of Los Angeles, Calif., and William R of Syracuse, and two brothers, Robert W. Buchanan of Lincoln and Orin J. Buchanan of Billings, Mont., six bothers preceded her in death. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Mrs. McFarland was a quiet woman with many friends who respected her and admired her for her kindly sincere life. Her calling, although she had reached the allotted span of life, will bring sincere sorrow to those whom she knew during her long and useful life in the community and her life among us and to those left to remember her sincere friendliness and kindly neighborliness will come the deepest sympathy in their bereavement. Funeral services were conducted from the home and afterward from the first Baptist church by Rev. C. M. Strong, who took for his text “I shall be satisfied when I awake in His likeness.” Burial was made in Park Hill cemetery. Syracuse Journal-Democrat, 19 February, 1932, page 1.
