Christensen came to America as a young man, working his way here from Denmark as a seaman on a ship. He had a fever at a South American port, so he stayed aboard the ship. Those who went ashore were somehow put in danger (food poisoning?), and many died. In California, he met and married Mette Marie Christensen. Mette had grown up in the part of Denmark that was northern Schleswig, which became a Danish-speaking part of Germany for many years... Mette had grown up in the part of Denmark that was northern Schleswig, which became a Danish-speaking part of Germany for many years until after World War I. Christen homesteaded 160 acres on Wise Road near Lincoln, Placer County, California, where he and Mette raised their five children and had fruit orchards. Their oldest two children, Chris and Anna, were named after Christen's parents. Their middle child was Hulda, and their two younger children were named after Christen's brother Albert (who was a shoemaker in Denmark) and Albert's wife Sophie. Some of Christen's close relatives came to America from Denmark a little later than he did. After his sister Anna Christensen Jensen became a widow, she followed five of her children to the Seattle area, traveling here by ship with Christen and Mette when they visited Denmark in the 1920's. Two sons of his brother Peder Christensen came to America before 1900, Christen P. Christensen and Nisse R. Christensen, who both settled in Iowa. Two years after his wife Mette died, Christen married Sophie Whittall, widowed mother-in-law of Christen's niece Louise Jensen Johnson, who was a daughter of Christen's sister Anna. Christen and Sophie were living in Vallejo when Sophie died. When Christen died two years later, he was back in Placer County where his children lived, but he was buried with his wife in Vallejo.
