His parents were Kjeld Svenson Petersen (1835-1887), who married Karen Veirup Sornsdatter in 1859 and lived near Lille Darum. Chris Petersen's mother died when he was 3 years old. His father them married his housekeeper and when Chris was 11 years old, his father died. His stepmother then married Peter Helle. So there were 3 sets of children in the family... In Shelby County, Iowa, Chris Petersen worked at the Elk Horn and Oakfield Creamery, then attended Elk Horn College (as it was called), to learn the language better. He became a butter-maker and manager of the Avoca Creamery, which was owned by Rasmus Frost. He got $35.00 a month, and $ 50.00 a month after he got married. On Oct 22, 1898, Chris married Lena (Ottolina) Andreas Jessen in Atlantic, Iowa. Chris & Lena farmed one year east of Exira, Iowa, then in 1899 they bought the farm where they lived the rest of their lives. They moved there (to the farm they bought) in February, 1900, and it was so cold 14 dozen eggs which were packed in oats, were frozen solid. Chris and Lena had four daughters: Maren "Miah" Caroline, born August 18, 1899 & married Chris Back; Hilda Magrite, born August 30, 1903, married Jens B. Jensen, and died November, 1975; Katie Marie Hansine, born Feb. 8, 1905 and married Andrew Jessen in Denver, Colorado; and Ruby Christine, born August 3, 1912, and married Willads Rattenborg from Hamlin, Iowa. Chris & Lena celebrated their 50th, 60th and 66th wedding anniversaries. Chris died 5 July 1965, and Lena died 27 January 1971.
