They were the parents of 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls: Jens Peter, Peter Madsen, Martine, Christian A., Marie who married Abel Stone, Katie who married Hans P. Petersen, Ottolina "Lena" Andrea who married Chris C. Petersen, Andrew P. and Nis Peter Jessen. They and their families all lived around Exira. Lena was born 1 April 1879. Lena told her children of walking across the fields to school when there was snow on the ground and it would build up under the wooden shoes until it was like wanking on stilts. They lived in Slesvig which was taken by the Germans so the Jessen children learned to read and write German, Danish and finally English, when they all came to America. Four sons came here first and the rest of the family arrived in Atlantic, Iowa on 11 March 1893. It had taken nine days to cross from England to Halifax, Canada with 900 passengers on board the ship. The family went to the place where Peter Madsen and Martin farmed together which was the Thue Jefferson farm. Awfully muddy, creeks full, lots of snow during the winter, not all corn picked, so that was the first job when weather permitted. That fall, Lena's father, Peter A. Jessen, bought an 80-acre farm northwest of Exira and lived there until 1902, when he sold it to Jens (Jim), his oldest son, then bought a place in west Exira, where they lived the rest of their lives. He worked as a mason. HE and his wife were charter members of the Exira Lutheran Church where he served as deacon for many years. Lena worked for Mr. & Mrs. Marsh who had a jewelry store in Atlantic and lived above the store. On Oct 22, 1898 Chris C. Petersen and Ottolina "Lena" A. Jessen were married in Atlantic, Iowa. They farmed near Exira, Iowa. Chris and Lena raised four daughters: Maren "Miah" Caroline who married Chris Back; Hilda Magrite who married Jens B. Jensen; Katie Marie Hansine who married Andrew Jessen; and Ruby Christine who married Willads Rattenborg. Lena died Jan 27, 1971.
