Description	:	In 1904 at age 14, Chris accompanied his brothers, John and Paul, to South Dakota where his father, Theodore, had purchased 800 acres of land six miles east and four miles north of Redfield. Chris frmed various amounts of the land until he retired in 1951. His son, Roman, took over the farm. Chris loved sports and played baseball with local teams. When the granary was built in the early 1900's, there were few roads. With mostly trails and few road signs, their granary became a landmark for people traveling in the area. It was large enough to store all the grain from the 800 acres and during the winter months they would haul the wheat to markiet with team and wagon. It usually took a full day to drive to and from the marketplace. Chris loved the South Dakota land he farmed even through the drought and grasshopper plagues. One of the reasons was because the land was level. He used to tell me that he could always tell when someone was from Iowa because one leg would be shorter than the other from walking across the hills. [Ref: S.A. Esser, 88, Redfield resident, will be at 10:30a.m. on Monday, July 7 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Redfield, with the Rev. Robert Fox officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery under the direction of the Coleman-Thelen Funeral Chapel, Redfield. He died Friday, July 4, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. Rosary will be said at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral chapel. Mr. Esser was born May 7, 1887 at Earling, Iowa. He moved to South Dakota at the age of 14 and farmed near Redfield. He married Anna Rueschenberg on Feb 17, 1909 at Frankfort. He has lived in Redfield since 1950. Mrs. Esser died in 1967. Survivors include tow daughters, Mrs Norbert (Henrietta) Jungwirth, Redfield; and Mrs W.D. (Lenora) Akin, Ashton; one son, Roman, Redfield; one sister, Helen Esser and one brother, Joe Esser, both of Earling, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter. Children: Isabel M.
