The Tecumseh Chieftain, Nov. 10, 1955: "Christoph Henry Bartels of tecumseh died Wednesday, November 2, 1955, at 7:10 p.m. in the Humboldt hospital. He had been in failing health one year, and was bedfast two weeks before his death. Hardening of the arteries and uremic poisoning was the cause of his death. He was taken to the Humboldt hospital on October 21. Mr. Bartels was born at Elk creek on December 26, 1878, to the late Henry and Hannah (Buethe) Bartels. He attended elementary school, and lived on a farm near Elk Creek until 1916, after which time he moved to Thayer county. He was married to Alvina Blume at the St. Peter's Lutheran church near Elk Creek February 6, 1902. To this union seven children were born, five of whom are still living. The family lived in South Dakota from 1930 until 1933, and at Elk Creek from 1933 until 1935. In 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Bartels went to California where he worked for helms Bakery, returning to Elk Creek in 1940 where he lived until 1952. He then came to Tecumseh where he lived until death. He was a lifetime member of the Lutheran church. Survivors are his wife, Alvina; the children, Mrs. Henry (Anita) Graue of republic, Kans., Elmer H. Bartels and Mrs. Cleo (Leona) Rall of Culver City, calif., Emmett F. Bartels of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Raymond (Irma) Gramm of VanNuys, Calif.; two brothers, Fred Bartels of Tecumseh and Arthur Bartels of Elk Creek; and three sisters, Mrs. John (Lydia) Eilers of Sterling and Miss Emilie Bartels and Mrs. William (Rosa) Borrenpohl of Tecumseh. Funeral services were held Monday, November 7, at 2:00 p.m., in the St. John's Lutheran church in Tecumseh. Rev. P. W. Sellman, pastor of the church, was in charge. Pallbearers were John Eilers, Erwin Borrenpohl, Edsel Bartels, Norman Haeseker, Raymond Grupe and Lorin Blume. Burial was in the St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery."
