Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, August 8, 1935; pg. 8 Chris Ostdiek, another of the pioneer settlers of the county passed away late Sunday, after an illness of several weeks from a septic infection. Mr. Ostdiek was 82 years and 3 months old and had lived in St. Stephens precinct on the same farm for over 56 years. He as born April 28, 1853, at St. Paul, Lee county (sic), Iowa, where he remained until the spring of 1872, when he went to Ottumwa, Iowa. After working in a brick yard at Ottumwa for several years, he came to Nebraska in 1879. He purchased a tract of virgin prairie land four miles east and three miles south of Lawrence and lived in a dugout the first few years, later building the home in which he died. On January 17, 1888, he was married to Miss Sophia Stritt in the little log cabin church at St. Stephens by the late Rev. Father Kuppenbender. To this union were born twelve children, two of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his wife and ten children, as follows: Mrs. Martin Brockman, Lawrence; Ferdinand Ostdiek, Indianola; Mrs. Wm. Hoelting, Lawrence; Alphonse, Ernest, Hubert, Leona and Clarence Ostdiek and Mrs. Richard Rempe all of Lawrence. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Catherine Bremhorst of Ottumwa, Iowa; a twin brother, Henry, also of Ottumwa; and another brother, Herman, of Minneapolis, Minn. Funeral services were held at St. Stephens Catholic church (sic) Wednesday morning at one o'clock (NOTE: Typed as written in newspaper), conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. Hahn. Pallbearers were the six sons of deceased. An exceptionally large concourse of friends gathered to show their respects by attending the final rites. - Lawrence Locomotive.
