The Mass of the Resurrection was offered at Sacred Heart Church, Lawrence, Nebraska, con-celebrated by five priests. They were Reverend Peter Gadient, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Lawrence; Father Edwin Stander, pastor of St. Stephen's and Blue Hill; Father John Prachar, pastor of Nelson and Superior churches; Father Melvin Rempe, a nephew of the deceased and Father Tom Mullowney pastor of Blessed Sacrament parish in Grand Island. Father Frank Lieblinger of Red Cloud was also in the sanctuary. Father Gadient was the principal celebrant of the Mass and Father Rempe delivered the homily. Jerry Streff led the congregation in singing, accompanied by Mrs. Richard Herbek at the organ. Serving the Mass were five grandsons: David Ostdiek, John Golka, Scott Ostdiek, Dan Ostdiek and Jerry Ostdiek. The Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degrees and the Catholic Order of Foresters all were present at the service. The Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus presented the family with an engraved Chalice in memory of Hubert Ostdiek. Hubert was laid to rest in Sacred Heart Cemetery beside his wife, Louise. Pallbearers were six grandsons: Paul Ostdiek, Ron Golka, Duane Ostdiek, Tim Bradley, Tom Ostdiek, and Mark Ostdiek. Hubert Clem Ostdiek was born on January 7, 1905 at the home of his parents east of St. Stephens, Lawrence, Nebraska. He was the son of Christopher and Sophia(Stritt) Ostdiek. His unexpected death was on May 15, 1979. Hubert graduated from the eighth grade at St. Stephens and attended school at St. Mary's College in St. Mary's, Kansas. After school, he returned to Lawrence as cashier for the Security State Bank where he worked until it was forced to close during the depression of the 1930's. During the war years, he worked at the Harvard Air Base. In 1943 he purchased the "Lawrence Locomotive" newspaper and after the war, split his time between managing the newspaper and selling Real Estate and Insurance besides doing a good deal of "tax" work for many people in the community. Hubert was married to Louise Clare Ostdiek on September 20, 1927 at St. Stephen's Church. To this union, thirteen children were born. Besides supporting his family when they were young, Hubert found time to be involved in church and community affairs. He joined the Catholic Order of Foresters in 1926 and the Knights of Columbus in 1927. He became a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in 1961. Hubert served on the Village Board, as chairman for several years, he was instrumental in installing the village public sewer system. He spent much time on church and community committees working for the betterment of his home town. Promotion and 'building up' of his church and community were perhaps a hallmark of Hubert, he was a charter member of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, The Lawrence Improvement Association, The 'Doctor for Lawrence' Committee, The Lawrence Country Club, Pax-Ten Inc. before it was sold to private interests and a member of the Nuckolls County Fair Board for many years. Hubert strongly supported improvements in the Educational facilities in Lawrence. The original expansion of the Lawrence High School in 1954, the installation of the village water and sewer system, the swimming pool, and many less obvious items were all due in no small part to the effort of H.C. Ostdiek. Hubert was a model of Christian manhood. He lived his Catholic faith and lived as an example for his children to follow and for his wife to be secure in. He tried to instill in his children a respect for education and just as important respect for doing the best that a person could do, under whatever circumstances they would be working under. His phrase was "do what you can do" and left unsaid, but implied was "and God will take care of the rest." During his later years, Hubert enjoyed playing golf and traveling across the United States visiting his children. He especially enjoyed the time he spent at 'the shop' where he could visit with everyone who came in and keep abreast of happenings around the town. Hubert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louise on April 1, 1979; one son, Alfred; two granddaughters, Lisa Ostdiek and Jennifer Mitton; two brothers, Ferdinand and Alphonse. Surviving Hubert are: seven sons: Glen Ostdiek of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; Linus Ostdiek of Fond du Lac, Wisc.; Marion Ostdiek of Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico; Bob Ostdiek of Gretna, Ne., Leland Ostdiek of Blue Hill, Ne., Larry Ostdiek of Gretna, Ne., and Allen Ostdiek of Lawrence; Five daughters: Mary Alice Ostdiek of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. John F. Bradley (Doris) of Neenah, Wisc.; Mrs. Dick (Lou Ann) Mitton of Woodland Hills, Cal.; Mrs. Bob Golka (Patty) of Grand Island, Ne.; and Mrs. Richard Sullivan (Julene) of Superior, Ne.; three brothers: Lawrence Ostdiek, Ernest Ostdiek and Clarence Ostdiek all of Lawrence; four sisters Mrs. Bill Hoelting (Dora), Mrs. Harold Schroer (Leona), Mrs. Martin Brockman (Katie) all of Lawrence, and Mrs. Richard Rempe (Hilda) of Superior.
