Mr. Colburn was born in Valentine, NE, on July 18, 1915, the youngest of eight children born to Ora and Elizabeth Colburn. He attended Valentine High School and Chadron College, Chadron, NE. He taught school in a one-room country schoolhouse for several years around the Valentine area, and then worked at a Valentine grain elevator. In 1937, he was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration (then the CAA), and continued with them as an air traffic control specialist for over thirty years, until his retirement from government service. In 1935, he married Marjorie Buchholz. From that marriage were born two children, Larry C. Colburn, Elk, WA, and Sharon Kay Lucas, Missouri City, TX, both of whom survive. Clair and Marjorie shared nearly 53 years of beautiful marriage, until Marjorie's death in 1988. In 1993, he married Wanda Jarvis and, once again, enjoyed a very happy marriage. Mr. Colburn was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church; York IOOF Lodge, York, NE; NARFE Chapter 20; and the Society of Airway Pioneers. He also was president of the Davidson Neighborhood Association for a number of years. He enjoyed numerous hobbies and activities, traveling, ice skating, hunting. He enjoyed flying, and owned his own airplane for a number of years. Besides his children and their spouses, Mr. Colburn is survived by his wife, Wanda; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Frank Colburn, Scottsbluff, NE. Mr. Colburn was generous and giving, often reaching out to others, strangers and loved ones alike. He was a kind and gentle man, and a devoted husband. He instilled in his children a spirit of self worth, independence and love of country and fellow man. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but will always be remembered with love.
