Clair married Bertha Erickson of Holdrege. She died Jan. 23, 1980. On Jan. 20, 1983, he married Katherine Amen. Survivors include his wife Katherine; brother, Von of Tecumseh; and stepdaughter, Janet Murphy of Curtis. Clair G. Hillyer was born Jan. 23, 1904 at Ulysses, NE. He graduated from Ulysses High school in 1922.He received his bachelors degree in education from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1927. He received his masters degree in administration from UNL in 1947. He married Bertha Violet “Molly” Erickson of Holdrege and the couple lived in several communities in Nebraska, including Gordon, Ord and Sargent. They also lived in Illinois, where he spent his career in school administration and coached football before retiring in 1966. Following retirement, the couple resided in Florida for 14 years before moving to Holdrege in 1979. In 1980, Molly Hillyer died. On Jan. 20, 1983, he married Katherine “Lucy” Amen. She was born on July 10, 1920, at Grandville, Iowa, the youngest of five children of Mortimer and Susan (Sawyer) Shook. Following her graduation from Ireton, Iowa, High School, she married John William Amen on May 30, 1940. They had one daughter, Janet, and lived at Ragan, NE., where he farmed with his father and also did blacksmith work. On Sept. 4, 1975, Mr. Amen died. She moved to Branson, MO., and then returned to Holdrege where she met Clair Hillyer at the bowling alley. They were married Jan. 20, 1983 and made their home in Holdrege. The couple enjoyed tending to their garden and traveling together through the United States. Due to failing health, the Hillyers moved to Holdrege Memorial Homes in 1996. On Oct. 31, 2003, Mr. Hillyer died and Mrs. Hillyer died on Oct. 16, 2004. Mr. Hillyer was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed baseball in his youth, played golf and bowled in his later years. Mrs. Hillyer was active in the Methodist WSCS in Ragan at the United Methodist Church and later at the UNW in Wilcox. She enjoyed being in the “Hub-Bub” Club.
