Hillyer, 70, who died at his home in Ulysses December 23 after illness of several months, were held in the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 28, with Rev. A. L. Embree officiating. The pallbearers were George Byam, Dr. Walter Flynn, Fred Pickering, William Reed, Andy Stamer and James Stephens. Burial was in the Ulysses cemetery. Born in Blocton, Iowa, January 25, 1873, Lawrence Hillyer came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Justin Hillyer, to Ulysses when a child, remaining here throughout the rest of his life. His marriage to Miss Sarah Cullison took place in Central City September 22, 1902. Mrs. Hillyer and the five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Hillyer survive him. There are three sons, C. G. Hillyer of Ohio, Illinois, Leon of Lincoln and Cpl. Von Hillyer, Ephrata, Wash., and two daughters; Mrs. Genevieve Rurup of St Peterburg, Fla, and Mrs. Winifred Bolen of Riverside, California. He leaves also three grand-children and two brothers, Antoine and Aden Hillyer of Lincoln. A pharmacist by trade, Mr. Hillyer owned a drug store in Ulysses for many years, later having a position as state drug inspector for eight years. He served as mayor of Ulysses several terms, also on the school and town boards. He was a member of the Methodist church.
