Read More	Obituary from the Glasco Sun, 7/27/1995: Dr. Clair L. Butler Died June 22, 1995 Many Sarasotans loved Dr. Clair L. Butler because he loved their pets. He would take the time to calm a nervous Fluffy or an injured Spot, but his patients included much larger animals, such as lions, gorillas, boa constrictors and alligators. The longtime Sarasota veterinarian died Thursday of heart failure. He was 89. "He was kind of a legend in his time," said his son, . . . , who followed in his father's footsteps, establishing a veterinary business in Bradenton. "There weren't any other vets around at that time." Butler bought his Sarasota business from retiring veterinarian in 1946, and he was the only animal doctor from Sarasota to Fort Myers, until another veterinarian came to Sarasota County in the early 1950's. He continued to practice until he was 78. In August 1984, two men entered the clinic and held up Butler. In the struggle that followed, Butler was shot in the upper chest and nearly died, according to his son. "He never really got his power back," . . . Butler said. Born November 12, 1905, in Glasco, KS, Butler graduated from Kansas State College in 1929 and began his career with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Depression-era New York City. At that time, horses were often worked to death on icy roads, according to his son. Butler didn't like big city life, so he took up a farm animal practice in Easton, Md., and later moved to Sarasota to open Butler Animal Clinic. The business at 2195 Fruitville Road cost him $60,000, and included two acres and a house next door, where Butler and his late wife, Delma, raised their two children. Being the only doctor, he not only cared for pets and farm animals, but he also was designated the winter doctor of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. "The first time I went out there, they wanted me to see some cats," he told the Herald-Tribune in 1985. "I thought they meant house cats. I went to the auditorium they directed me to, and there were 10 lions." Butler was also one of several doctors to participate in the rare procedure of operating on a gorilla with a brain tumor. The ape Gargantua was brought to the clinic, where several doctors from around the country came to operate. Sometimes when people found injured wild animals they brought them to the clinic, and Butler would care for them at no charge. Butler was a member of the American Veterinary Medicine Association, the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge. Survivors besides his son include a daughter, . . . ; a sister, . . . ; a brother, . . . ; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, is in charge. A memorial service will be held in Glasco, KS, at a later date.
