Description	:	Claire LaRue Strait was born Aug. 8th, 1921 in Keosauqua, Iowa, one of 7 boys. His parents were Victor and Anna Carabella (Parsons) Strait. He spent his childhood playing in and around the Des Moines river that ran through Keosauqua; he would haul water from the river to the elephants in the Toby Tyler circus in order to get a free ticket to see the circus. Read More	Claire LaRue Strait was born Aug. 8th, 1921 in Keosauqua, Iowa, one of 7 boys. His parents were Victor and Anna Carabella (Parsons) Strait. He spent his childhood playing in and around the Des Moines river that ran through Keosauqua; he would haul water from the river to the elephants in the Toby Tyler circus in order to get a free ticket to see the circus. He left school in the 8th grade, during the Depression, in order to go to work and help his family. In his early 20’s, he served in the Marines during WWII and also during the Korean War, for which he received several citations and medals for his bravery. He then married Betty Jean Frederick on July 14th, 1951. They had 3 children: Jean in 1952, Larry in 1956, Joni in 1960. Claire lived in Ottumwa, Iowa most of his adult life, and worked for the Burlington Railroad as a brakeman, and later, a conductor. He was diagnosed with cancer in July 1975, and given 6 months to live. He fought hard, facing the disease squarely, and he lived until December 10th, 1976. He died in the early morning at Ottumwa Hospital, with loved ones present.
