Raish, a pioneer resident of this city, in Akron Community Hospital in the early morning of Tuesday, January 10, 1956, after a brief illness there came to each of her many friends in this community a deep sense of personal loss. Clara Belle Chandler, the daughter of Chester and Tryphena Chandler, and the last of seven children, was born at Rome, N. Y., March 17, 1870, then moving with her family to western Plymouth county in 1878 and settling in the Broken Kettle area; but the grasshoppers took their scanty crop and the family—in 1879 moved to Portlandville, now the town of Akron. She obtained the advantage of a liberal education and attended the All Saint’s School in Sioux Falls, where she studied music, afterward teaching piano to many young folks in Akron. On May 2, 1889, she was united in marriage with George W. Raish, of Akron, who was in the lumber business. In 1909 the family moved to Bowman, N. D., he being an auditor for the Fullerton Lumber Co., and this remained their home until he retired in 1913, when they moved to Billings, Mont., where they lived until 1927, then moving to Long Beach, Calif. There in 1929 her husband passed away. She then traveled still maintaining her home in Long Beach until moving to Akron in 1940. Mrs. Raish was a member of Edna Hedges Chapter, No. 15, Order of Eastern Star and First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Mass. Her only child, Mabel Raish Bollum, preceded her in death on January 15, 1937, in Billings, Mont. She is survived by three grandchildren, Carl W. Bollum, of Kensington, Md.; Mrs. Clara R. Beasley, of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. June B. Desch, of Billings, Mont.; five great-grandchildren, six nieces and three nephews. Mrs. Raish, having attained the mature age of 85 years, 9 months, and 25 days, was unusually alert to her household duties and the affairs of her community. Her greatest desires were attending church on Sunday and Eastern Star Lodge, of which she had been a member for 65 years. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Wesley Methodist church, Rev. Chester L. Guinn officiating. There were also eastern Star rites. Mrs. Esther ferguson was soloist and Mrs. Harry Nelson was accompanist. Pallbearers were D. G. Ross, Kenneth Peters, Clarence Aalfs, Evan Harris, Arvel Lake and Kenneth Hummel.
