She had been in failing health for several years and had not been able to leave her bed since October of last year. Last rites were held here yesterday afternoon in Calvary Methodist Church and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J.G. Waterman. Local singers sang several suitable hymns after which the remains were laid to rest in the South Marion Cemetery. The following were pallbearers: John Carlstedt, Rudy Andrews, Lloyd Anderson, Justin Anderson, Clarence Carlson and Everett Bergman. Clara Charlotte Samuelson was born March 28, 1859 at Blakesburg, Wapello County and at her death on March 14, 1943, had reached the old age of 83 years, 11 months, 14 days. On July 13, 1879, she was married to Swen M. Johnson, of Stratford. They located here and the most of her married life was spent in the community. The last few years she had lived with her daughter, Etta, where she became ill Oct. 14, last year and was bedfast until her death. Those left to mourn are: the daughter, two sons, Garrett Johnson of Stratford and Earl Johnson of Des Moines, twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. Members of the family preceding her in death are: her husband, two daughters, Mary Anne and Mrs. James Kail, and one son, Leonard. For more than sixty years a resident of the Stratford community, Mrs. Johnson came here at such an early date that for some years a small log cabin west of town was the home of two families. Later they lived on a farm west of town for a good many years. They were also residents of Stratford for a number of years. Through it all Mrs. Johnson was identified with the life of the community at a very early pioneer day as well as during the more recent years. Her death marks the passing of one of the really early pioneer settlers.
