Johnson Sven Melcher Johnson, son of Charles and Anna Johnson, was born on a farm two miles south of Stratford, Dec. 15, 1857, and died in his home near Stratford on Aug. 15, 1936, at the age of 78 years, 8 months. His entire life had been spent in this community with the exception of two years when he lived in Stromsburg, Nebr. On July 13, 1880, he was united in marriage to Clara Samuelson of Stratford and six years ago this worthy couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Six children were born of this union. Two have preceded the father in death: Mary Ann in infancy and Leonard in February, 1931. Besides his bereaved wife he is survived by the following children: G.O. Johnson, Mrs. Etta Eisenhart, Mrs. James Kail and Earl Johnson, all of this community. Four sisters also survive: Mrs. John Eckstein of Boone, Mrs. John Andrews of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Fred Anderson and Mrs. Alfred Poulson of Stratford. One brother, Charley J. Johnson, of Stratford, survives also, besides other relatives and a host of friends. Deceased was of the solid pioneer stock who with his parents settled in this section of Iowa. He was of a kind nature and enjoyed his home and family very much. A precious one from us has gone; A voice we loved in stilled. A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled. God in his wisdom has recalled The boon his love has given. And though the body slumbers here The soul is safe in heaven. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the family home just west of Stratford and were in charge of the Rev. A.E. Appelquist of the Baptist church. A quartet composed of Mrs. S.E. Shaeffer, Mrs. George Peterson, Sam Swedlund and George Harrison sang several songs with Maxine Miller as accompanist. The Rev. Mr. Appelquist sang "God's Tomorrow." He used as his sermon text the following words from Job 16:22: "When a few years are gone, then I shall not return." Interment was made in the South Marion cemetery. The pallbearers were nephews of deceased: Charley and Rudy Andrews, C.L. Carlson, John Carlstedt, Justin and Lloyd Anderson.
