But, in the living of her life, and especially through her example and her profession, Clara charted untold stories, re-started untold stalled lives, changed untold numbers of people, (most of which I suspect even her loved ones don't know about) because she did something for a living that very few people can do. Clara Bender was a reading teacher. Now, it may not have ever occurred to you before, especially if you had a lifetime of good teachers like I did, but of all the people who may have influenced your llife, it is the person(s) who in the first three years of your formal schooling, (no matter where it was) who taught you to READ who had the greatest influence on you. Reading, of course, is the gateway skill to EVERYTHING else. Without it, you can survive, of course; you might even thrive, but you will tap-dance like Greg Hines to get through every task of every day. If you know any of the millions of Americans who are classified as 'functionally illiterate', then you know what I mean. Clara spent her career as a reading teacher, retiring as a specialist--someone who taught other teachers how to teach reading---so her legacy is far more manifold than even I can imagine. Doing what she did for a living changed the way people look at things every bit as surely as Altman and Price did. She's been in the home care of her daughter and son-in-law out in Albuquerque for a few years, and after a fall a few weeks back and some beginings of dementia, the family was beginning to watch the final decline. Working in her home office, Clara's daughter Kay, a minister, was writing a sermon. From the TV monitor she had set up in Clara's room, Kay was able to observe, and, providentially, record this surprising event. From sleep, Clara woke up and recited THIS, as a speech, and then when back to sleep... "Each individual must make his own life: be it a happy life, be it an exciting life, be it a humble life. Each life is valuable and God blesses everyone. If we would all open our eyes and look around, we'd see what needs to be done. Then, if everyone would just do their part, the world would be a better place for all. Sorrow, crying and fear would end; no one would be poor any more; together we could make the world right for everyone. And God is there to help us." And, so 96-year-old Clara not only provided what her daughter's sermon was that week, but through the haze and clouds of approaching death and resurrection, suddenly gave us all the REAL October surprise--the one I told Kay to look for---though I had no idea what it would be. Clara not only stated her own case, elucidated her own tombstone message, and defended her life before the throne, it seems, but makes us all look at things in a new way. And the simplicity of her words, like Altman's use of complexity in words, was just her style, because she was teaching us all---once again, and for the last time---how to read."
