Funeral services for Clara Caswell, who died yesterday, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Chico Funeral Home with the Rev. Benjamin Franklin officiating. "Mrs. Caswell was born in Pennsylvania on Dec. 8, 1875. As a child, the family moved to Nebraska. About five years later, they moved to Iowa with a small group forming a covered wagon train. "Mrs. Caswell was born in Pennsylvania on Dec. 8, 1875. As a child, the family moved to Nebraska. About five years later, they moved to Iowa with a small group forming a covered wagon train. During this trip, she recalled the group was attacked by Indians on two occasions. At 15, she moved to the South Dakota territory and worked on the Rose Bud Indian Reservation as a clerk in a commissary. She recalled the capture of Sitting Bull in about 1890 and his death. "In 1907 Mrs. Caswell moved to Merced. She lived there until 1918, then moved to Durham and was one of the first settlers of the Land Colony. Since 1934, Mrs. Caswell had been a resident of Chico. Her husband, Leonard, preceded her in death in 1947. "She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. "Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Clara Isham of Chico; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Martin of Montana and Mrs. Kate Erickson of Nebraska; two brothers, Reuben Keller of Nebraska and Thomas Keller of Minnesota, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Entombment will follow in the Chico Mausoleum." ~~~~~ Per email received May 21, 2017: "Before she married Leonard Caswell, Clara Keller married John Shelton Jones on June 26, 1900 in York, York County, Nebraska. Son Harry Franklin Caswell, who took his step-father's name, was born in 1901. Per the 1910 census, it shows that Clara and Leonard had been married 4 years, and Harry Franklin Jones Caswell was 8 years old. John Shelton Jones was last living in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1925. No divorce record was found. It's possible he might have deserted Clara and Harry." dek
