She was born March 29, 1896 in Leavenworth to John Henry and Josie (Socwell) Clepper. Her father was the first school teacher in that area. She attended school at Synarep, Omak and St. Paul, Minnesota and has lived in North Dakota, Missouri and Washington state. She married Richard W. "Dick" Whyatt in Omak on Jan. 31, 1918. They were sawmill owners on Tunk Creek and in the Conconully area. In 1935, they moved their mill to Nespelem, entering into partnership with J.R. Duncan, forming Whyatt-Duncan Lumber Co. Clara was bookkeeper for the business and served as an officer and volunteer for many community service organizations. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Riverside, Nespelem and Grand Coulee. Clara will be remembered for the unselfish giving of herself and for her many kindnesses. Survivors include two sons,Floyd Whyatt of Spokane and Dale Whyatt of Denver; three daughters, Vera Rice and Myrtle Jensen of Grand Coulee and Irene Goodwin of Spokane; two sisters, Ada "Peggy" Noonkester of Wenatchee and Olga Kaufman of Okanogan; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1960 and one grandson, Lee Thallman, also in 1960. Funeral services were held on March 2 in the Strate Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Coulee. Pastor Pam VanderDoes officiated. Burial was in the Spring Canyon Cemetery in Grand Coulee. Strate Funeral Home of Grand Coulee was in charge of arrangements. (Obituary provided by Darlene Dittmer)
